how come it manages to escape from the bottle and cling to the bottoms of all the other jars in the cupboard? i've tried everything i can think of, even washing and drying the bottle before i put it away but it still manages to get out and make a mess everywhere

It's a GELF. There's nothing natural about gravy browning.

If you make proper gravy, using just the meat juices- it's not the colour that you would expect- rather a lighter colour so hence he invention of gravy browning x

Because proper gravy is made with flour and the meat juices making a roux that then has stock/vegetable water added until it's the consistency you require (I like mine on the thicker side) but it's quite pale so add the gravy browning until you like the colour. Bisto is the same thing but in powdered form.

Well, it is when you first buy it, but after a couple of decades of evolution, who really knows what it is? Still I'm reassured that yours sounds more advanced than ours, ours hasn't learnt to stray too far from the bottle yet, just an inch or two...

But gravy browning's already been burned. Burning won't kill it, it'll only make it stronger

Haverfordwest

It was used in the 1940's when rationing was introduced during the war and stockings were difficult to get hold of. So, the ladies would paint a line of gravy browning down the back of each leg, to mimic the seam of the stocking. It was very effective, but had to be washed off before getting into bed, or the sheets would turn brown.

There's no mention of it, but I wonder if they did their eyebrows in the same way?

Nah, the gravy browning darkened the whole leg, the 'seam' was done with an eyebrow pencil

That's ok, I used to have an American half-brother who was technically proof of it's efficacy
