following on from the thread on the census...
I ask as the other day I made a call to the tax office to ask a generic question...but was still called on to answer the usual security questions before they would entertain me.
the question i failed on was "what's your favourite food?"...now, i know at some point i must have been asked and answered that, but as i don't know when, it was impossible to recall what it was...at that time! so, apparently i was wrong....on a question about me, i was wrong.
now, unless i show myself for an interview at a tax office to prove myself, they will not discuss anything else and any tax credits are on hold.
i find that kind of question, personally, evasive and of no use...it's not a fixed question.
do we have to divulge too much information to this country..or not enough? what's your personal opinion and what are your concerns?

I regularly used to forget my "memorable information". Now I leave it in a coded format on my phone. That's ok though as long as I can remember the fooking coded format

perhaps, but would be more useful to ask relevant questions that are set...such as place of birth..not things like what's your favourite food, which is as flexible as the menu i'm preparing |

there are too many companies with too many 'memorable phrases' ...it becomes ridiculous! |

i refuse to talk to them..i ask how i know who they say they are and not someone trying to get information from me. |

my bank do this regularly fro marketing calls i also refue to anwer the questions, get the reponse ring this number and you can confirm us, nope aint doing that, could be any fake mumber, well go into yoru braanch and they can confirm it us, aint doing that eitehr its a city centre branch, aint paying the extorniate parking charges just for you to market me something i do not need or want |

Another one i had recently some credit company called me for a char reference fro a freind who had applied for a loan form them at extornitate rates, you know the kind of thing but this new leatehr suite, costs £600 cash but you will pay us £2500 on weekly terms over the years
Phoned me out the blue, asked me to confiirm friends address, told them i had nver heard of them and friend had not asked me to do so, told me to phone friend and ask them.
friend had no only never heard of this company, and certainly not applied for credit with them either

As I recall the punter gets to choose which 'memorable question' they offer to answer in order for HMRC, the bank or whoever to ascertain you are who you claim to be.
Other questions usually include such 'fixed' responses such as 'which was your first school/ first car/ mother's maiden surname etc.
Security is a two way street. 'We' expect 'them' to keep our info safe (ok, it doesn't always work) and 'we', in turn, have a duty to remember what we told 'them' in the first place. |

nope, they send out a form with lots of questions about yourself. |
