I've just been talking to a lady and her son (19years old) has just bought his first car.. brand new ford fiesta £16,000, she had suggested he get a second hand car ... He said it's got to be a new one.
His money (loan) his choices.... have kids priorities changed , |

To be fair I would rather my child was driving a new car then an old one. New brakes and all that, but I think brand new is a bit extravagant for a first car. |

saying that when i turned 18 i got a loan just because i could.. spent it in 3 days and then paid it off 3 years later... worst thing i ever did
Was bad enough buying a 2nd hand car on finance,, £135 a month... again regreted it
Nower days if i want something i save and buy it out right. |

I think mine was about £4K. Shared with my brother. The first one I bought myself was about £8k, but I could afford to buy it outright. Then I had to sell it when I got fuckin epilepsy and lost loads within months. |

It was the "it's got to be new" that surprised me, I was just pleased I had a car back in the day new was possible but I'd have had no money to spend on anything else, holidays nights out etc. .

I'm fine with the new bit, the £16k is a bit much to drop, I doubt he's earning a lot more than that a year so I'm surprised he was approved for finance. |

He will learn a very expensive but valuable lesson that 16 grand is worth 12 as soon as he picks it up. If he's a new driver and he wipes it out which is possible as he's so young and obviously the best driver on the Rd he can kiss his driving days goodbye but hey what do I know I'm just an old git who's not long since given his own son his 5 car but then I am in the trade and can work miracles with car deals |

"My first car cost £150.... "
Snap, back in 1984: Austin A40 mk2, 6 months older than me, old lady owner who wrote me a long letter about her history and asked me to take care of her
But my insurance £60 fully comp through the classic car owners club
The thing is, back then, when anything broke that couldn't be fixed with tape, string or a hammer, you simply went to the scrappy. Most parts from many cars were interchangeable back then, and when a Unipart opened opposite where I lived, you could buy brand new spares for peanuts.
If a secondhand car broke down today, I doubt there's little an inexperienced youngster can do (presumably modern Haynes manuals just say "take it to a garage, mate"). And until Europe sort it out, many spare parts are limited to original manufacturers. So a new car offers reliability with warranty and a better idea of total monthly costs.

Personally I get no enjoyment from buying a car...owning one or spending money on it.

I work in insurance
A young girl came in for a quote 17 years old driving a 10 grand Peugeot.
Her quote was nearly 3 grand.
Then young drivers aren't our target market
We are more suited to those driving tractors. |

"19 and straight into 16 grands worth of debt. Not only that but there will be insurance at 2 grand to pay for somehow. All for a car that will be worth a fraction of that in a short few years." more than likely getting free insurance as part of the deal for the first year .it will get interesting at renewals time

Kids are better off leasing with everything thrown in these days. As insurance is a nightmare .. my 18 year old has been looking and even a car for 500quid we are looking at over 3k for insurance. She can have a c1 for less than the insurance payments each month |

£100 Escort 16v Sports, insurance wanted £1000 ish insurance in 1994. So drove it around without for a week, then got rid if it. Stupid I know, to be driving without insurance (but at 17, guess I was).
Ended up with a Mini van, 850cc engine barely Road legal, passenger seat wasn't bolted down and was more like a rocking chair
Good memories though |

Yeah, like, if a parent can afford to, and wants to get their kid a new car because of safety and they think their kid has earn't it, fair enough. But seriously, if a kid says it has to be new tell them they get what they are given or they can buy it themselves.
When I passed my driving test my parents put me on the family car they don't use for work, and I was pretty chuffed with that, I expected them not to bother. That said cost of insurance shot up and they told me once I got to uni they would take me off it because obviously I wouldn't be using it. |

Yeah they are so expensive. Running, maintenance cost, mot's, insurance. I'm looking for a half decent cheap one that wont be too bad insurance wise but people are just trying to flog stuff for more than it's value.
And it's annoying cause if I had my own car the chances are I'd be able to apply for better paying jobs. |

My first car was a Metro called Millie. Cant remember exactly what it cost but it was under £1000.
Didn't scratch or ding it at all. Got more confident so went and brought a new Nissan Micra, crashed it and it was a write off within 6 months of buying it.
Tried getting back behind the wheel a few times but found it too stressful. I now have a chauffeur, much better. |

Mine let in water of biblical proportions. You'd brake suddenly and there'd be this tidal wave from the back all over your feet.
I solved it by drilling two large holes in the floor.

My daughter has a cheap £300 vw!
Did her brakes and new stereo for less than £80 !
But once she passes her test it's going to cost around £2,500 for insurance!!
I can now understand why not having any insurance can be appealing if the fine is only about £300 !!! |

My first car, back in 1988 was my granddads Austin Allegro in a nasty shade of rusty brown. It was immaculate inside and out, lovely brown velour seats and a square steering wheel
I hated that bloody car

It's how we learn. The more someone told me not to do something , the more I did it. That's why I stayed with one of my exes so long, my parents disapproved. Well he's living at home he has that disposable income, so he can afford it. |

It's not about the car per se, and it isn't possible to generalise about kids' priorities. Personally, my desire was for travel and experience, not a car like my dad's! Perhaps there is a shift among some youngsters to a ' have it now' mentality, and many will think they stand no chance of getting a deposit together for a house, so why not blow it on stuff on the never never? But this is not limited to kids! ... |

Good point, possibly a reason behind it needing to be new. If they drive sensibly for the first year, and look into one of those black boxes, insurance renewal might not be too bad.
Another point is loan rates are so cheap nowadays. In our day mortgage rates were 15% and bank loans in the low 20s. I took out a £5k loan to pay off my student overdraft and was shocked to read I'd have to pay over £7k in interest if I took the full 5 yrs to repay it! |

Bought my first car off my mum for £3000

I think what has changed are the priorities that the kids are being brought up with . Some parents give their kids anything and everything they want and the surprised when they won't accept anything but the best . Lol.
They created the genie and then are shocked they can't then get it back in the bottle lol |

I have only had one car and one motorbike that where newer then ten years old. Both ended up more than then ten year old ones that cost less than £1000. I have fine as much as 50,000 miles a year with very few breakdowns.I also had the joy of driving cars that would have cost £30,000 or so that I could never afford new. |

If I'd gone solo a week earlier I'd have still been in school at 16- flying myself around in a Vigilant- still hard to believe now.
Mind that was with air cadets but they're being scrapped it seems.
Then learned on Landrovers and finally £150 worth of Nissan Cherry

Don't know about kids, but when we were married my husband refused to buy a new car. Said the minute you drove it out the showroom it depreciated blah blah!
Fast forward twenty years and 19 year old passes her test, brand new Suzuki. Second daughter passes test: brand new Suzuki. He moves out of London, two years pass he upgrades the cars, two new cars again. Next year he'll replace them again, plus he pays the insurance.
The cars have strings though: they are obliged to visit. |
