As far as I know it was a spoof rumour from years back and people simply put it on their profile because they think there is some point to it.

There is no point to it and it's a waste of space.

You Dont Need to Know, right now

It's in the FAQs on this site:-

"Q. We've noticed a legal disclaimer paragraph that some people have on their profiles. Should we have one too? What are they about? Do they do any good?

A. The "legal disclaimer" is pointless nonsense and all does is take up extra space on our servers. Please remove it if you have it on your profile. If you're worried about privacy please set your account to be hidden from non-registered users on your privacy page (this also hides it from search engines but may take a week or two to drop out of search) and remove the notice (and encourage others to do likewise).

Common sense advice would be NOT to put any information on your profile (here, or on any such site) that could identify you or that you don't want to become public! So for your own benefit, don't post phone numbers, real names or email / instant message addresses on your profile that people might see or "Google".

Some people may put non-identifying pics on their public profile but keep face pics private or for friends, for example."

A sydney university classics professor was carrying out research, he has written a handful of books and as part of them he compares modern day sexuality/sexual practices with those of the Romans, ancient Greeks etc.

Would you like his name, e-mail address and phone number

Oh, and its time to update that disclaimer as he now works at Queensland university

I asked this question a while back. Essentially the whole thing is an exercise in guillability, there are no legal disclaimers to protect you on the internet like this

"It's all fake, there are no universities in Sydney "

There's no universities in Australia, true story.

"does is take up extra space on our servers "

I wonder how much space text actually takes. I bet it's negligible.

An extra chunk on 50% of every profile on fab? That's a lot of space

They don't even have schools there, so the discaimer is nonsense.

But worth including in all profiles, as it helps one attract appropriate users. Even better if included with a text picture of some boobs, a kangaroo and a boomerang.

Yeh but it's not like it constitutes 50% of the memory taken by the profile. The text is bits/bytes of space!

Here occasionally, but mostly somewhere else

It amuses me when I see an amended one quoting some US law.

I can't really afford to restrict my appeal any further, but I do find it off-putting and am highly unlikely to message someone with it.

"...think i found out at one point and thought someone might be able to summarize an explanation of thios common footer statement on bp profile texts"

The explanation is that they are there so that you can easily distinguish the intelligence level of the different profiles' owners.

Scroll down and the absence, or presence, of the Sidney University disclaimer will tell you everything.

Failing that look for the Facebook photo right disclaimer, does exactly the same.

1 high quality picture would probably be equal to about 10,000 average profile descriptions.
