I, 'may' have been at the self checkouts at Waitrose and accidentally pressed 0 to how many bags used.. I have literally walked into the store and robbed them of two carrier bags! Surely I should feel this guilty?! |

If there was no violence or threat of violence it wasn't robbery... |

I feel your pain. I used the vending machine at work today, I paid for 1 packet of crisps and 2 dropped out.
I almost spared a second thought before I ate both of them! |

A little while ago David Mitchell wrote an article about how self-service checkouts we're leading to staff losing hours and their jobs, while giving a poorer service to customers.
He concluded that the only way to prevent supermarkets getting rid of more staff would be if they realised more stuff is being pilfered. Everyone should steal one item, each time. It's the moral thing to do!
I think he was joking, but not sure |

And more to the point, when those two carrier bags you purchased end up blowing away and strangling a poor helpless duckling, you will be shamed even further knowing that you so cynically avoided paying your 5p penalty |

"Is there a difference between theft and shoplifting??
yeah. the sentences handed out are different."
The sentence may vary, but it is still theft, and theft is what you would be charged with.
But it's only an offence if at the time you knew or had intent to steal.
However, once you realised you had taken them be it by mistake, and you decided to keep them, you are guilty of the offence. I REST MY CASE ME LUD.

never in all my 35 years did I think their would ever be a thread about stealing bloody carrier bags!!
I'd rather stick the 5p in the charity boxes they have in tesco then stick it through the till to be honest, can you honestly tell me that whole 5p goes to the charity? I'm willing to bet that only a fraction goes where it's meant to go.
I'm not for a moment condoning stealing but if something is intended to go to a charity it should all go to the cause, not part of it.
I wonder how much profit all the supermarkets are making from the once free carrier bags? I would like to see the figures for how much goes to the charity and how much they keep!!

You will find that a lot of money given to charity doesn't get to the charity and then a large percentage of the money the charity get then goes on running costs not good deeds... |

I used a self-serve till at tesco recently and was accused of taking a bag without paying and was told by the staff member and security guard that I had to pay.
I refused and they called over a supervisor who told me I had to pay, again I refused.
The supervisor called for a manager who insisted that I pay, again I refused, then a cleaner who had been watching and laughing pointed out to them that I was using a bag from iceland not a tesco one.
Guess you dont need to be clever or observant to work for tesco.

Unless they are different to all the others, the whole 5p goes to charity and they also swallow the admin costs.
None of the supermarkets want to charge but legally obligated to.
They were never told they couldn't keep the money and make a profit but when one of them announced a policy to hand all monies received to charity the others had to follow.
Not they may not have anyway but it kinda forced the issue |

Don't worry, OP, I'm sure you'be had some dreadful experience in your past which completely excuses you from having any responsibility for your actions. In fact, you could probably sue Waitrose for failing to protect you from the trauma arising from the incident. |

Will this is a good point! The carrier bags didn't have bar codes on them. However it's OK! Tomorrow I need to go back to Waitrose after work (wine-obviously) so I'll return the two bags when I checkout, I'm wracked with guilt lol |

"Technically you shouldn't pay for a bag because you are advertising the business
That's not true.
Otherwise we wouldn't pay for a football shirt covered in company logos. "
That's by choice |

Honestly I've done nothing but think about it! How bad is that! I'm either to honest or I have nothing important going on.... probably the latter lol! Some guy mentioned earlier in this thread about the carrier bags ending up on the street suffocating ducks... I nearly lost the plot lmfao! |

well it's pretty weird that 10p theft, that was forced onto you and would've been free if the law hadn't been changed by psychopaths who think everything should be taxed, would bother you but it's your morals and you sorted it now. |
