If you believe the older genration, football was much more "family" prior to that though. My family is from Salford, and my dad reckons he used to wander down to Old Trafford as a young kid, (school age) with his mates. Weren't the 70's and 80s kind of a regrettable blip?
I was never interested much in Football and chose to follow the Rugby League instead, the same kind of people tried to introduce hooliganism there, but it got stamped out pretty quickly.
Why shouldn't sport be accessible to all ages?

It's sad that this has happened for both clubs and for british football. Once again a small minority have blackened football. This kind of thuggish behaviour belongs in the 1970's, the thugs who did this should hang their heads in shame. I'm a liverpool fan btw but i hope the Man United team are all ok regardless of the score. YNWA! |

What annoyed me more (other than us capitulating) but that is for my football forums
Was that Sullivan game out and implied nothing happened. The fa have to do something. Don't get me wrong I have mates that support West Ham and they are good lads but there was no need for the bottle throwing and smoke bombs. |

I'm not applauding the actions of the minority at all , I hope they are identified and life banned. Talking to friends that were there in fan & met police capicity the late arrival of the coach heightened an already challenging & volatile situation which is why they requested to arrive at 4pm.

if i knew being in newcastle and a kid of the east end that everyone would be down there in or around the area, going to game or being in the pubs with or without tickets for the last game then i am not sure why united didn't know and the met police didn't know.....
this is the 2nd time united have cocked up their timings (same happened at spurs a few weeks ago) and the met police didn't have nearly enough people on duty...
it was the same for the last arsenal game at highbury......
it will be the same for the last spurs game at the lane...... |

Awful events and reminiscent of a by gone era, mostly unpleasant memories.
Questions about the planning of the club leaving so late in London traffic to drive through tiny back streets around the east end.
Stayed watching on TV and thought the celebrations were pretty poor, cliched and badly co-ordinated. What did you Hammers think?
However, props for having the Cockney Rejects!!!!! Decent ending.
Where on earth was Geoff Hurst? I take it Billy Bonds is sick, given the brief clip we saw of him. Growing up in the 80s he was synonymous with West Ham in my mind, always seemed like a gent.
Anyway I guess Hurst will be preparing himself for the endless mentions of 1966 coming up during this summer's football zzzzz lamo.
Big fine for West Ham. United need a boot in the balls warning for being late twice. It's not rocket science guys.
Oh and the police also want a kick up the arse. Given the crowds there was an increased risk. This wouldn'thave happend at any high risk game in Scotland.

Just wondering if West Ham played last with with players they actually owned or was it like Tevez times when playing with unregistered players against Man U , they should have had points deducted then and got relegated that season, instead the spineless PL didn't even fine them and left them to play in the PL, couldn't possibly do that to a London club could they, if football is not corrupt they should have been relegated then, the Courts later decided that they should have been relegated and then they had to pay Sheff United £25m instead, so the last match at the shite old decrepit Upton Park could have been so much different and rather than celebrated as "good old hammers" should have been shown as the cheats they were and playing where pompy have been playing for the last couple of seasons. PL equally as shite and corrupt, snouts in the same trough. Anyone who has been to UP will have had no surprise something like last night could happen , moronic behaviour in a civilised society, no place for it in the modern family orientated game we now have in the UK |

Don't disagree that Man U should arrive early and they will get sanctioned by the PL or should it be Sky who really sanctions them as it throws their scheduling out. Arriving 4 hours B4 a game is too much and you have them sat around in a poxy changing room for hours, it won't be long before the PL clubs arrive by helicopter to London clubs to avoid the traffic and potential trouble spots like last night. From a neutral point of view the after match show was garbage,self indulgent and poorly stage managed, I appreciate to WH fans it may have come across differently but for sky it was a cheap programme to screen.
Regarding WH fans behaviour, you can polish a turd and it's still a turd, moving from the shithole that is UP to a new shiny stadium doesn't change the turd, the genuine WH fans who support their club and create an atmosphere for both sets of fans to enjoy and feel safe in is what's important and if they know who did throw bottles they should let the police know, if someone threw a bottle at their children or family member they would want justice to the people who did it, football is a sport for families, in today's society just because a coach gets caught in traffic should not mean people get bottles thrown at them by d*unken louts. Justice has finally been done Alfie the Hillsboro families/fans , real and genuine football fans everywhere should do their bit to raise the game not condone dreadful antisocial behaviour, irrespective of what time the opposition team turn up.
This isn't the first time Man U have turned up late for a game.

yes there was.... joe marler only get 2 games for calling wales samson lee a gypsy boy....
in context, at least you can say football deal with racism better...as luis suarez got 10 games for the incident with patrice evra... and in scotland a player got 7 games for racially abusing a player...
lets not also forget the england rugby fans who were caught abusing nigel owens....also causing the best ref in the world to retire |

people who watch football are from a another world to those who watch rugby,football has always been the working mans sport it's in the blood,we grew up on the estate playing as so did generations who have had it hard and had to graft for a living and it's totally different from the toffs and well to do rugby followers,I'll rather live in the 80s compared to the way the country is now.You will never stop violence hooliganism were a island race we've been brought up to follow the club we've been born into,if your a real football fan you will know and have the passion that's what lacks on the pitch these days so fair play to the fans who stand up |

Why shouldn't sport be accessible to all ages?
Grown men having a full on fight about a game of football has to be the most ridiculous thing ever. people who watch football are from a another world to those who watch rugby,football has always been the working mans sport it's in the blood,we grew up on the estate playing as so did generations who have had it hard and had to graft for a living and it's totally different from the toffs and well to do rugby followers,I'll rather live in the 80s compared to the way the country is now.You will never stop violence hooliganism were a island race we've been brought up to follow the club we've been born into,if your a real football fan you will know and have the passion that's what lacks on the pitch these days so fair play to the fans who stand up

this council estate lad saw the violence first hand and it was sickening, so much so that i stopped going to the match..
its nothing to do with being a hard man more to do with cowards attacking in a pack anyone they thought they could get away with..

Laugh all you want but the conduct of fans at games is, on average, superior to football fans as evidenced by the fact that rugby fans are actually capable of sitting with each other unlike football fans. |

If you believe the older genration, football was much more "family" prior to that though. My family is from Salford, and my dad reckons he used to wander down to Old Trafford as a young kid, (school age) with his mates. Weren't the 70's and 80s kind of a regrettable blip?
I was never interested much in Football and chose to follow the Rugby League instead, the same kind of people tried to introduce hooliganism there, but it got stamped out pretty quickly.

Ummm nope that's not how racism works. There's no prerequisite for offence to be taken to make something racist. Plus racial abuse is a distinct type of crime and therefore has a distinct meaning so people can't just make up the definition of racism as they go.

No one had been banned in the Premier league prior to Dembele, to say it never existed in football is a very sweeping statement. I've certainly witnessed it it at amature level. Of course there's always biting......

I wasn't on about Rugby Union anyway - although I do like it and have been to games, I was talking about Rugby League, simply because thats the sport I grew up with.
Let me give you a list of some of those Rugby League towns where people (according to you) "Didn't grow up on estates (or graft)"...
Wigan
Leeds
Hull
St Helens
Castleford
Halifax
Salford
Warrington
Wakefield
Huddersfield
I could go on, but you get my point.
I mention Rugby because its the sport I grew up with, Other posters have mentioned that it doesn't happen in other sports either. |

The fares were being held by the fans, Not thrown in the videos I seen,

Yeah it does look like someone threw something on that video... although the flares didn't look like they were thrown, they were just lighting them from some reason to welcome the teams.
It seems they are now banned from using flares, which is understandable"

I have seen videos of one or two fans throwing cans at the coach, One or two!
The fares were being held by the fans, Not thrown in the videos I seen,

What I am concerned with is that West Ham had the cheek to beat Man U so they have their name dragged through the mud yet Liverpool fans do exactly the same and nothing gets reported. |

I was there. The kick of was delayed because there was 10,000 fans outside and Man U turned up late.
Anyone of the missiles thrown by the Liverpool fans could've broken a window and I'm sure that was the objective.
The riot police were not there until after the game. It was just normal bobbies on horses.

That is papering over the cracks to say the least. Nobody deserves to die at a football game and the Hillsborough disaster has rightfully flagged up the serious failings and corruption of the S Yorks Police. No doubt the story will go on as the families seek rightful justice from those who directly caused the deaths of their loved ones.
Ask the Heysel families if they feel that they have had justice and the answer will be no. The Liverpool olive branch was regarded by those families as too little, too late. A very small number of Liverpool supporters served around 13 months in jail for indirectly causing the deaths of the Juventus supporters despite lots of footage being available of people who were directly involved. 13 months is not a long time for killing someone - even indirectly but no supporter, police officer or anyone from Eufa has ever been held accountable directly.
Every year we quite rightly remember the Hillsborough tragedy but we don't remember the Heysel tragedy. That is unfair and quite simply not right. The Heysel families know only too well what happens on Hillsborough day in England on every football pitch but no one remembers their family members who never came home from a football match either. Is it because we feel a collective sense of guilt that we don't recognise it? That we were the cause?
I don't know if there are statute limitations on the Continent but those people also deserve their time in Court so that Police and Eufa can also be held to account for holding a game in what was another entirely unsuitable venue. There were also allegations, never investigated that National Front supporters from Millwall and Luton were the main instigators of the violence.
The Heysel story is not fully told and we all need to deal with it again, if only out of respect for fellow supporters who never came home from a football game. For those who want more information you can read about it on the Anfield Wrap. |

The issue is that the West Ham game was fairly high profile and so much footage appeared on social media. The footage appeared long before the game had even started and illustrated exactly why the kick off had been delayed.
My opinion is the West Han and the Met ballsed this up. That road should have been barricaded open from Midday. Whether West Ham didn't want to pay or the Met underestimated the crowd I have no idea but I reckon there will be consequences. |

No. Think about it. Manchester United aimed to arrive two hours before the kick off which is absolutely normal. A home team cannot dictate to an away team that must arrive four hours before because the Home team were unwilling or unable to control their own supporters and as a consequence a public highway was illegally blocked. Match preparation is important and no team would arrive at an opposition ground four hours before kick off. |

This isn't the first time Man U have turned up late, they just can't Lord it about and do as they wish. And they were no where near on schedule to get there two hours before. They didn't even get to Plaistow before 6:15 and there wasn't any crowds there. |

As is often the case with social media another video has emerged of fans attacking a players bus.
This time it is the saintly Man U fans attacking the man city bus.
Same thing as the other videos , bottles thrown and windows smashed.
One stark difference though, no mention of it on mainstream media.
My earlier usumption of a northern media bias is looking even more likely.
God forbid any southern team beats a northern giant next season, any excuse will be dragged up and you'll be accused of all sorts.
(Except Man U & Liverpool aren't exactly what you call giants anymore) |

"People bringing up Hillsborough yet again in a pathetic attempt to associate it with hooligans. Read the verdicts again. The fans behaviour played no part in what happened. It was caused and covered up by the police who were woefully negligible in their duty to police an event.
Heysel is another matter. Let's not forget the ground was not fit for purpose. The fans were to blame and were prosecuted át the time. Not 27+ years later.
What happened the other night has nothing to do with Liverpool so why not incite your bias shit elsewhere. I for one am glad West Ham were relegated and that United won't be in the champions league. Two of the vilest sets of fans I've ever had the misfortune of coming across. "
it was Villa that were relegated! A few years ago it might have been an easier mistake to make but the shirts are quite different nowadays |

There was a story in the mail the other day(I didn't read it only seen a picture with the headlines, Liverpool fans seen stealing seats from Anfield after draw against Chelsea,
Same paper same day,
Souvenir time! West Ham fans pose with seats, Signs and hoardings ripped up from Upton Park,
I suppose it's who writes the story, But you could go on all day with media stories that you/I think are against our teams or north south divide |

They are removing all the seats/wooden seats at the main stand as part of the expansion, And they would probably have been thrown in a skip, People have sat in them seats for 10-20 years, I don't see any difference apart from the way it was reported in the media |
