oh fuck think ive messed up.
I pay by Direct Debit for my car tax each month.
The guy i just bought my new car from said im covered if i cancel my current car tax and then apply for the tax on the new car (even though i dont pick it up til Thursday)
My mum thinks im stupid and im now driving and untaxed vehicle
My logic was that i've paid til the end of the month anyway and i cant claim that back.. |

Exactly I don't think you can claim part of a month back believe it's only paid back on complete months. So I'd agree as you've paid this month you are covered until 31st may |

Did you cancel with the bank or DVLA? If with the bank, I wouldn't worry as you are still taxed until the DVLA contact you to say you aren't covered. If with DVLA, then you aren't covered. Just set up a direct debit online and cancel when you need to x |

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think that tax is transferable at all any more.
If you sell your car they have to get news tax in their own name and you have to get a refund for what's left on it. |

It's all a rip off now they've stopped the road tax being transferable between owners. It pisses me off that the car has to be paid up yet it gets cancelled without refund for part months! |

Correct..
I have cancelled my existing car tax
I then applied for new tax on the new car |

Then you are covered; the new car is taxed; the old one was taxed for this month; ( they only do whole months)
Even if the police clock you for it on an ANPR they will be able to check when it was done |

"Check the gov website. It's your safest bet to see which car is taxed."
im sure im covered on the new car that i wont pick up til thursday as that was a brand new application..
my logic was/is that even though i cancelled my current car tax yesterday im still covered til the end of the month because thats when its paid up for.

Use the tax checker
You only needed to cancel the DD your tax would automatically be stopped upon the administration of selling your old car
Its very doubtful indeed that your tax will have been cancelled and car deemed sorn
We could post 175 Speculative posts , just go to the gov
Tax checker which will give a definitive date xxx |

if it was towards end of month delay informing dvla as the old owner tax will cover, as soon as dvla get the change of ownership tax is void until the new keeper retaxes it, even if you sell to a member of family living in same house, and if you delay informing dvla any motoring offenses will go to registered keeper, you cant win |

I would think, but don't know for certain, that providing you didn't SORN the old car, then the tax would be valid to the end of the month. |

If your old car (the original one) is now not being used you will need to SORN it. You will get a refund for full months of taxed not used but if you have paid up till the end of this month it can be argued that your old car is taxed till the end of the month. The DVLA will usually give 2 weeks to resolve any tax or SORN issues.
The new car will be taxed from the date you taxed it. Not the beginning of the next tax month (as you are not in ownership of vehicle you lose the time (presuming from the start of the month you taxed it in) but the vehicle is taxed as of today as the payment has been made.
Essentially you have paid two road taxes for two vehicles. One ends at the end of this month. One began at the start of this month. |

Judging by the confusion and incorrect information on here the government has done a great job with the new rules and is raking it in from honest but confused drivers.
Of course the ones who don't give a shit carry on regardless;)
Your old car became untaxed the moment you sold it, and you need to tax your new car before you drive it for the first time, which means you need insurance sorted too.
Now dvla may well not notice or care about the odd day if you continue driving your old car til Thursday - as you point out you've paid til the end of the month via direct debit.
BUT!! If you have an accident between now and then your insurance won't pay up as you are driving an untaxed vehicle and are therefore not legally on the road.
Lose lose situation. |

You are fine you have paid tax for your old car until the end of the month, all you have cancelled is the tax from the 1st June onwards, as long as you have applied for tax on your new car and have insurance then that is also fine, but of course you will have to pay for May as well. |

The op has paid for the tax for May so is fine she has cancelled it from 1st June so as long as her insurance hasnt been cancelled she is fine if she has an accident |

Interesting topic and comments. I think the moral of all this is that you should so arrange to sell and or buy a car at the month end. Needs some agreement with the vendor or buyer but at least it might deprive the mean fisted government department from some money and stick two fingers at them |
