I'm part of the generation that was brought up during metrification in the 70's, so I'm comfortable with using either method

I still think it's time we left imperial measurements behind

Apart from the pint, of course

Oddly enough we use chains all the time at work. The unit of length that is. I chain = 22iyards or 66 feet.

You'd think that penises would move to the metric system - you get a higher number - but they seem to remain stubbornly Imperial.

19 cm 1 is the biggest.

Nobody uses centimetres except the French!.

We use millimetres here but I'm of the age where I use feet and inches for long stuff and mm for short stuff.

Rolls of lead are the best..

Yeah I'd like 4 pound, 300mm wide, ten feet long please

Millimetres

Centimetres

Kilometres

Milliseconds

Seconds

Hours

Milligrams

Grams

Kilograms

Tons

They're all part of the metric system, so are few other measurements, for temperature etc.

Mm are commonly used in suspension travel for bicycles. 100mm or 203mm suspension forks for example.

For me i love the metric system, one litre of water is 1 kg in weight,a cubic metre tank holds 1000 litres and weighs a tonne(1000kg).

I wouldn't want to go back to pounds and gallons and tons.

There again I'm quite happy with 1 inch bsp and most of the world have adopted that.

The yanks have their own gallons their own thread size/pitch...I often wonder how they go on with the Canadians next door, who've completely metricised years ago??

Come on Courtney fess up

It doesn't really matter.

I bought a set of feeler gauges for my 1907's car.

I asked the guy specifically for Imperial gauges. He assured me that they were compatible with both Metric and Imperial measurement systems.

Upon getting home, I discovered an inscription on the outer body reading:-

"Matric & Emperial".

That is what good quality and good money buys these days.

I understand and are comfortable with both systems, the bigger discussion should be are we talking bone pressed or non bone pressed

Does it really matter?

Each to their own?

For instance, when I'm dead and buried "6 feet under", maybe I will come back and haunt you with a stick precisely 1.8288 metres long to check that I have been buried to exactly the correct, prescribed depth. And that correct allowance has been made for both subsidence and compaction.

I know it's being pedantic and I should "get a life", but when you're "six feet under", getting a life is not quite so easy!

Imperial works quite well when you need to measure something's length in units, but you don't have a square unit of water hanging about.

Inch is the length of a thumb from knuckle to tip.

Foot is, well no shit Sherlock...

Yard is three foot.

Moral of story is, when buying, always buy from the Fat Bastard.

And because of this everyone is familiar with the notion of, say " 40mpg" or " 30 mpg", and wouldn't have the faintest idea whether 9ltr/100 kms or 7 ltr/100 kms was "good" or "bad".

It annoys me that no government has ever put any effort into changing to kms or even better changing the side of the road to drive on

They nearly did back in the 70s but Brits are generally unable to cope with it.

Ordnance Survey maps went from 1"/mile (1:63,360) to 2cm to a km (1:50,000), NATO ( including US) uses km......

At one point, in the 70s/80s, all new motorway and major road junctions were designed to be able to be reversed, so we easily could go to driving on the right , then the idea got binned.

Can't see the point of changing the side of the roads for driving on. It would cause huge confusion and make most cars worthless overnight.

Apparently it's being staged over a fortnight to make it easier to bring in.

Trucks and buses will swap to right hand driving at midnight on Friday 19th of August and cars will swap over the following weekend.
