Michelin Star dining, worth it or waste of money?

I like good food from eating at a good greasy spoon to a Michelin Star Restaurant.

I don't mind paying extra for a special meal out and look forward to trying new places.

What's your views on eating out?

Do you think Michelin Star restaurants for example are over priced and a waste of money?

Or do think they are worth the extra expense?

Or is food just food to you and if it's tasty and fills a hole cheaply your happy?

62 West Wallaby Street (not real address)

My friend is a Michelin starred chef. He would test out dishes on me. Plus I would go to his work and help him out in the kitchen abit and he would cook me something. I wouldn't have ever been able to afford to eat there and pay for it

worth it in most cases. But if you're not a foodie then it's probably not.

Have two local started restaurants, very nice. Not because I'm biased. Ok maybe a little

Plymouth and Newcastle (sometimes)

Waste of money...When we have a meal out I want to leave the restaurant fat and full instead of having to look for a burger bar on the way home.

If you are our restaraunts cooking regularly, you would develop a very serious weight problem. Do you know how rich that sort of cooking can be?

Classical fine dining, from our French cousins is so rich from butter (mmmm) & cream (mmmmmmmmm).

Modern European see some with a more delicate touch. See Rene Redsepi's Nomo, Copenhagen.

(If anyone fancies trying out Nomo PM me!)

The chef who catered for my 40th is Michellin starred and the food was out of this world, not an every day extravagance as I still haven't won the lottery (how rude), but lovely for a special occasion.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum

There are 5 restaurants in Yorkshire with Michelin stars. I've been to two so far (I'll be doing another in two weeks). One was massively over priced, and one was amazing value. It doesn't matter who the chef is - they can have bad days, just like the best of us.

Not Michelin starred but I was taken to dinner by a friend with more money than sense to Sketch, off Regents St in London.

The meal was spectacular and was expensive.

The waiter came round with a telephone directory-sized wine list and my friend airily asked the waiter to "Guide my selection."

When the bill came... the food was £500 but the wine came in at £1,700.

Shoulda seen my mate's face.

I forgot the Boxtree got theirs back. Hmm, another one for the list. The one in Leeds has a waiting list that goes up to Rapture. Although with Michael O'Hare cooking I don't really mind. Prawn brains with sea urchin juice is not top of my list of things to try.

My Mum took us there for her 60th. It was just the best ever. It's not dinner, its an experience.

I used to go to a Caribbean place near where I used to live, the food and the atmosphere was like being at an aunties house, it was so special to the local Caribbean community that the owner used to be known as auntie.

She would have never got a Michelin star in a million years, but I doubt if you got all the Michelin stared chefs in the country to try you would never get them to re create her brown stew chicken, or salt fish fritters.

My point is, chefs come in two flavours, art and science, science is boring food, technically brilliant, but bland, the best food comes from the heart, I'd be amazed as good as he is, if Marco Pierre White could cook the way auntie used to, and keep control of the place like auntie did, saw her throw two yardies out by their ears (literally) for "cussing and foolishness "

It's the heart you put into a dish, not how many awards

I like them, love eating out - they're often not even that pricey really, some have great offers etc.

I do think you get that little extra better service, quality of venue, and food etc is just a bit more protected quality / innovation wise

Good food is good food, don't need stars or other accolades. Mak's Noodles (Central, Hongkong) has a star.

However, when one does over 80 hours a week in kitchens and paid less than say a bin man.. Got to have heart to work in those kitchens. Got to.

I would rather go away for an evening or go to the theatre or a concert than go to an expensive restaurant. My friend loves dining out so I do go with her but I'd rather spend money on a more exciting evening out
