Can anyone remember 'Dial a Disk' ? The service provided by the GPO where you stood in a pone box, in the freezing cold, Dialled the number then put your money in the box, pushed button 'A' then listened to the latest song from the 'Hit Parade' through a louzy 20kHz telephone link ? If you got no reply you pushed button 'B' and got a refund.
Then there was (and still is) the speaking clock ..... For some bizzare reason tonight I just remembered the number of the speaking clock from about 30 years ago. From where I lived it was 91 9081 - (91 was the old STD code for Newcwastle) Christ only knows why that sprung to mind, but isn't it weird how one thought leads to another then to a forum thread ??
So .. Dial a disk, anyone - ??? and what song can you remember
Sandie's was 'Shang a Lang, by the Bay City Rollers ... |

I remember Dial a Disk but never used it.
Talking of the speaking clock, I know a funny story:-
A guy dumped his girlfriend in a nasty way and went on holiday. She still had a key to his flat, went in and dialled the speaking clock in Australia from his landline, leaving the phone off the hook. He came back to a massive phone bill hahaha |

I remember it well, all stood huddled in the phone booth listening to what ever was the latest out. Cant remember any of the top of my head.
Did anyone go round stuffing tissue paper up the 2p/10 cyliner around the local phone boxes then once a week go and pull it out and collect or your "winnings" |
