I'm almost halfway through my first degree with OU. I chose to do it to prove to myself that I could do it. It's not proving at all easy anymore and as my exam approaches I am quite frankly bricking it.
Anyone else currently studying or completed studies with OU? If so, I desperately need inspiration to avoid procrastination. I've tried to engage in social media for OU but I find the lack of contact with other students a big part in my current situation. |

I am just about to complete my final EMA on the final level 3 course and am on target for either a good 2nd or a 1st depending on the outcome for this course.
I studied a subject for interest only and while some of my studies have dragged a little, after I finished level 2, I began to see the light at the end of the tunnel. The only advice I would give is that if you are like me, you should not take a break as you will never begin again.
I was lucky in that my studies began just before the fees went up so that I am paying on the lower fee structure. Only occasionally meeting with students at tutorials was one drawback but we did set up a meeting group to occasionally chat over coffee on my last two courses, which helped a lot with the feeling of academic isolation. |

Marky - I'm finishing my first Level 2 module. My tutor is a bit useless but easy with his marking so it's swings and roundabouts. My fellow students seem to just be coasting too. We had a few drop outs as the year has gone on. Looking forward to the next module though.

It is a challenge. I thoroughly enjoyed level 1. I'm just suffering from an all round lack of motivation. I recommend getting a SCONUL card (via OU website just search SCONUL) so you can use a local uni library - excellent for study space and fooling yourself into thinking you're having a normal uni experience. |

Good luck to you......the important thing to remember is that you will score much lower on an EMA or exam. While tutors markings are moderated at some point, this is not entirely rigourous but the markers on final assessments are checked more often and to a deeper level. |

Hi OP...I graduated a few years ago now...open degree...my level 3 courses were youth:perspectives & themes and art history in 20th century. ..The former I had an ok tutor but very little contact with tutor group as I lived in middle of nowhere and it was a bugger to get to any....the later my tutor was cool, had advantage of a weeks residential halfway through so kept in touch with fellow students after it...(still occasionally talk to a couple)....also used forums quite a bit too  was doing it while working full time. ...such a great feeling when I graduated. ..did want to carry on but family said no more. Enjoy hated referencing. ..sometimes took longer than the ema! |

Hey Bob. High five. I dream about referencing after a TMA/EMA. I even find myself Harvard referencing my own thoughts (Mac,M. (2016) online, Forum post 'Open University', www.fabswingers.com, Accessed 8 May 2016)

I used to write key points on cards and look through them during day when had five minutes. ...also was given tip that if you have a selection of questions in which to choose to answer if you use a separate sheet and jot main 'bones' for each question before deciding which ones to fully answer, submit it as you will be marked on any correct key points you may have written down, even if not completely answering |

Haha, I loved Word's bibliography tool for that reason! I completed my ba hons in business studies last year after 6 years. Was challenging and I learnt plenty about myself. I did enjoy it though! |

It's been difficult. I gave up one year after I failed a module. But talked myself back into.
Although the urge is great, I stay away from the social media pages now. They either gave me an excuse to procrastinate or put me off because everyone was scoring higher than me.
I use a local coffee shop to study, I figured out quite early that I don't study well in solitude or silence. Luckily they are really understanding and provide coffee at regular intervals! |

The 'Open' degree pathway may be worth looking into. I'm studying a broad based Humanities degree so I get to pick and mix from a huge wealth of subjects. |

What pathway??! Terrible language. Goodness forgive me. I'm tired.
My module is dull as dishwater. To add insult to injury the module materials are terribly written. Less painful pulling teeth. I'm much more motivated when it's interesting and something to get my teeth into. Hopefully next one will provide that for me. |

just wanted to say good luck OP and it will be worth it in the end..ive only done one module with the OU.. but that has given me the possibility to go to 'on campus uni' from october..so im thankful i did x bite size chunks for revision and treat yourself after and do some yoga or deep breathing for clarity and affirm you CAN do it..hugs xx |

I didn't do OU but I did Distance Learning with Warwick Uni and there were downdays definitely.
On FB I had the post I put on 4 years ago awarding my degree and it was all so worth it...

I'm doing a degree online and is hard work especially as it's management and leadership, not something I've ever been. I'm supposed to allocate 8hrs pw but seem to spend every waking minute doing it and is hard with no contact with other students. If I don't get a management role it won't be such a big deal as I've learnt so much plus is not bad going at 55 to get a degree

I graduated with an MBA from the OU a number of years ago. It was hard going with a high drop out rate. Only seven graduated from an original cohort of twelve. Stick at it. Apart from anything that may follow, you will feel very proud of yourself. |

why is everyone saying stick at it?
I certainly intend to, its a long slog but its helping me stay sane at a time when I could have so very nearly gone off the rails, and not in a good way
I know there are a lot of judgemental people out there so I will keep my actual reason why I'm doing it to myself but suffice it to say, I am really enjoying the pathway I have chosen and I am on course to graduate in 2017, subject to passing exams |

It's rewarding and it seems to have really helped you op. I'm studying atm but not with the OU and student support is ideal to keep your morale up, especially when it's tough.

it went very quickly but then the time flies when you are writing a load of crap lol....im sure I'm heading for a resit in September so will have to wait and see

Yep it's hardwork but as others have said definetley worth it.
I'm sitting exam tomorrow (fri) to end my 1st of my 2nd year modules.
In jan I almost jacked it in but I perservered and hoping I can do ok in exam to complete.

I'm sitting exam tomorrow (fri) to end my 1st of my 2nd year modules.

Out of curiosity has anyone done a STEM course through the OU and did you find any organisation in the feild actually reapected it?
Was debating going and getting my engineering degree but having looked at the work/course from a colleague who's done it it looks very shallow in comparison to a campus course as well as missing a lot of the practicle elements due to it being distance |

Yeah i can see it being ik for say sociology, psycology, history etc anything that is basicaly a book learning course/a hobby course but for something like engineering i think you'd miss out on so much from the lack of access to machines etc.
I have fot a raft of practicle/vocational qualifications to back it up but i can imagine moving to an engineering role and just being so far behind the standard of others knowledge that it wouldnt work.
I am quite tempted by some of the food science courses though purely for fun |

I think it depends what area of STEM you are doing. For engineering I can imagine the lack of practical being a problem. If doing pure maths, then it's very good. I used to attend the lectures but now its mostly all done online, which suits me as I can attend in my PJs on a saturday morning
I also get a lot of support from the facebook forum groups ...
but overall, I think that people who complete their degrees via the OU are very much more respected by prospective employers because of the inherent difficulties with certain aspects of distance learning that we have to contend with, and ultimately overcome... |

Well i went wrote stuff on the paper, just wait now and see if 'stuff' is good enough to pass
that being said others who had revised much more still seemed to struggle so who knows |

You would need to look into it more, I know that some expect you to have workplacements. I know i looked into a business degree and they said I'd struggle not actually working to cover the work needed.
so as it would be a pratical course more than book based this may be the case too. |

"Out of curiosity has anyone done a STEM course through the OU and did you find any organisation in the feild actually reapected it?
Was debating going and getting my engineering degree but having looked at the work/course from a colleague who's done it it looks very shallow in comparison to a campus course as well as missing a lot of the practicle elements due to it being distance

I did my first year of my degree. Then during my 2nd lost my way. Went back to it last year after ignoring it for 2 years but life had other plans. That said I'm on track to have my Diploma by new year.
It's hard going. Especially when you have a set back. Huge admiration for you all. X |

Well i went wrote stuff on the paper, just wait now and see if 'stuff' is good enough to pass
that being said others who had revised much more still seemed to struggle so who knows"

I used to volunteer for the OU in Wales, before they disbanded that branch of it in a shakeup...
all I had to do was to tell people how great the OU is and had out leaflets at libraries and summer fairs ...
for me it was absolutely no hardship at all.. |
