I'm not really sure how they're supposed to work. My phone gives me a step count etc....and a GPS based workout... What is different about a fitbit?

I'm tempted anyway as I love gadgets

I don't think I'm going to get addicted, I haven' got it fully programmed yet, but apparently I did a half marathon yesterday haha!

I find the whole personal bio-telematics craze to be odd and a bit surreal.

We evolved as species just fine without having to know how many steps we took each day or what our sleeping heart rate was over the last 7 days - oh and now its selling personal health insurance (much like smartphone telematics in cars and car insurance).

Plus the mild obsessive, compulsive nature of monitoring, recording and analysing of everything little movement every single day; then publishing it on social media for absolutely no good reason.

Im waiting on a real-world application where it can be used for some actual good - such as an early indicator of an impending medical condition or to track a conditions advancement / decline.

Yes, I know, I suck the joy out of everything. I am Funland Security.

What is wrong with wanting to better yourself?

You did make me chuckle and your right. Don't obsess about how far you walk or what you do. Just enjoy.

Pooch and I walk miles and miles every day , we have no idea how many steps or distance .

We walk for the love of it

Absolutely nothing, and nowhere does it say anything about it being wrong for people to want to better themselves.

I bought one because a good (male) friend of mine found it helped him lose weight by tracking the difference in intake vs output accurately, that is all - I wondered if doing that might work for me.

How do they track intake - do you need to input what you eat into the accompanying app so that it maintains a 'calorific burn counter'?

Yup, you can set it up to remember favourites so oft-repeated meals can be easily entered. The idea is that you ensure your exercise exceeds your intake by a specific amount each day for a specified level of loss per week.

I'll be interested to see if it works for me because normally only zero carb regimes do and they're a bitch to stick to. I ride, I dance, I swim, so if I slip on the diet I should be able to see exactly what I have to do to keep on track - like bugger off dancing 'til 2am! That I can do I reckon!

Not a fitbit, but a Microsoft Band 2. Find it useful to track my activity and act as a prompter to get me off my bum sometimes.

Managed to burn 4000+ calories yesterday which is more than double my daily target.

My resting HR averages around 44bpm but i've recorded 38 before now - quite alarming what alcohol does to it though.

I had a Nike Fuelband a few years back, loved it but had so many problems with it I gave up. I got a Fitbit last week and love it already. I find it gives me the motivation to do a bit more and hopefully get a bit fitter. Why not use all this tech to achieve something positive?

I have raised though that I should have got the Charge HR so have ordered one and will be giving Gin the flex!

So what are the best fitbits? How do they work? Do you need to sign a contract for the wireless feature? Or does it just connect when you are at home etc?

No idea about fitbits, but my Band 2 pairs with my phone and a phone app. App auto uploads data to a personal webpage on the Microsoft Health website.

Band works via Bluetooth, you don't need to have your phone with you when exercising as data will auto load to the app when the Bluetooth connection is remade.

Assume its pretty similar for fitbit.
