Are we carnivores or herbivores? Or are we dancers?

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Seeing the vegan lifestyle take off the way it has and all the proof that we can sustain a healthy if not better lifestyle by eating a plant based diet then I ask are we naturally herbivores.

We would have sharp teeth if we were carnivores surely? Cows have flat teeth because they eat plants and shit? So are we like the cow and should be eating plants and shit?

All of a sudden I have a desire to eat a bacon sarnie.

Maybe I will go get an orange as its a bit late for cooking.

I eat what is available and appeals when I need sustenance, this includes dairy product, fruit and vegetables, meat.

Guess that makes me a opportunistic greedy buggerivore

It's an evolutionary process giving you the widest chance of survival.

However that doesn't distract from your original argument that being vegan is alot better for you than being omnivorous in this current scenario

Well, if I remember correctly, according to an episode of QI (and if Stephen Fry said it, it must be true) then humans and giant pandas are very special.

If you look at our intestines as evidence, we are the only two species who have swapped. Giant Pandas have a very short intestine, so must have been carnivores at some stage in their evolution. They are now herbivores. But they don't have the digestive system to support it, which is why they have to eat all day.

Our intestines indicate that we were, at some stage, mainly herbivores.

Two very good episodes of Horizon by Dr Michael Mosley on 1) the health impact of eating meat and 2) the environmental impact of us all eating meat are an interesting and converted us.

Weve always been meat eaters thats why we look like we do.

Not enough evidence whether where better of eating plants. Come back in a million years when weve all lived on nothing but plants then we can see how we have evolved.

we've got teeth for eating both really, flat grinders at the back and sharper biters at the front.

for all we know it could be previous diet that has caused teeth to evolve and not that our teeth are for a specific type of diet. similar in how darwin thought birds beaks had changed to adapt to their local diet.

i think our digestiv esystem is similar to a koalas and people made out this was proof we're veg eaters naturally. but if we take how evolution works with adaption then theres not really any proof of that.

Yeah but your throwing in advances in medicine and living standards, I mean they both counter the original argument.

Scientific research shows that large red meat consumption is not good for you... Sure the she scientific research is also working on ways to cure you off that but that's no different than smoking being bad for you proven by science and science then helping a smoker live longer through various drugs and surgery.

One word gives it away. Eyes.

We have forward looking eyes the same as all land predators. This enhances depth percetion making hunting easier.

Our diet is adapted to also eat vegtables but go back to caveman time and the common food was meat supplemented by fruit and berries.

I don't think there's too many cave paintings of tofu

Not really, most people today live to thirty without any help from medicine... I myself have never had any antibiotics in my life!.

That's from modern living standards, water, sanitation, heat, fresh air, good food...

In another few decades I'll probably start relying more on medicine

noone dies of smoking they died of smoke related illnesses but this isnt about smoking. Your basing this on people living in japan for 2000 years whose to say its not to do with humidity levels or something we all know plants thrive better in different weather/temperatures ect why not humans. Plus if theyve been living on rice and vegatables youve got nothing to compare it to. Its invalid

"our eyes face forward to help us navigate through tress, there's not much meat in the trees. plenty of fruit though."

Actually there is very little that is edible except meat in the average temperate forrest. berries need sunlight, if our forward facing eyes say anything about our origins it's that we were social animals needing a group to watch in all directions.

Social non predatory animals have sideways facing eyes with more peripheral vision to look out for predators.

you can say anything you want really about this stuff, there's no proof of anything.

we're all discussing theories. i'm fine with that.

if you look at how physicians get the results oyou're all talking about you'll see it's guess work.

no. that's canablism!! it's because we genetically split off from monkeys is why we have these forward facing eyes.

monkeys are our cute relatives though. it'd be like eating a baby ape.

i'm pretty much vegetarian just because i feel bad about eating animals as they seem self aware and not as stupid as we've been taught they are. just nee dto stop drinking milk in my brews and i'm sorted.

Chimps hunt and tear apart monkeys, live, before eating them. It's a fact. It's how they became social. It's how some groups evolved into us. Don't feel guilty for being part of nature.

i don't think i will give them up. took me ages to get it into my head that it wasn't ok to farm and eat animals (and i still drink milk, have cheese and eggs so not totally accepted the against farming bit of that).

i think if eating them made me feel sick, because of how i feel about them having the right to a free life, then i'd stop eating them.

when we had pet chickens i easily gave up eating chicken. i know clem says don't feel guilty about it but i can't help it. i don't like the texture of most meats as well and didn't eat much meat because of that so that helped.

I keep chickens. I kill and eat them. I'm much happier about doing that than buying ready to roast from the supermarket. Until they create sustainable vegan food that EVERYONE can eat, I'm out.

i'm ok with that. my dad does the exact same thing. he even treats the chickens like pets and then just kills them whenever. i do find that strange because of how i feel but people have the right to do whatever they want.

i'm not lecturing, just talking really. i like talking and discussing things, and thinking about unimportant stuff that's important to me. and trying to work stuff out.

"Weve always been meat eaters thats why we look like we do.

Not enough evidence whether where better of eating plants. Come back in a million years when weve all lived on nothing but plants then we can see how we have evolved.

I no longer eat meat, not a vegatarian as i do once in awhile but if im going to eat anything it will be fish.

Actually there's massive amounts of evidence that shows eating meat, especially red meat is not good for you.

Or you could just look at China and Japan that had very good longevity with a mostly vegetarian diet"

Just 'cause it you, doors, and I like sharing with you, the seventh day Adventists in the US are currently getting some scientific and media attention because of their vegan lifestyle and much increased longevity compared to 'normal' Americans.

In case you didn't see it (as mentioned above) Michael Mosley's second Horizon programme on eating meat and the environment is well worth a watch if you can find it
