Pinching from hotels

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Was reading about customers stealing from hotels in a mag in the Drs the other day. The usual, soap, towels, robes etc. But some very daring things too....curtains, sheets, rugs and even a window (?!)

So whos done it in the past? Whats the oddest thing you have stuffed in your overnight bag? Did "liberate" an ice-bucket years ago.

xx

I stay in many hotels and I can't say I have taken anything really, I'm very particular about what toiletries I use on my sensitive skin so that may have something to do with it.

My mother however has a basket in her bathroom full to the brim of every conceivable shampoo, gel shower cap and whatever else isn't nailed down in a hotel bathroom.

Having being fortunate and staying in some of the leading hotels of the world on my work travels I have built up quite a worthy stash. Sod your Molton Brown miniatures. I've got full size sets of Bvlgari and Aqua di Parma toiletries. Several sets of slippers and laundry bags. The odd robe. Lighters, pens an ash tray. (I no longer smoke). Loads of housemaid sewing sets, stationery.

Basically if its a perishable ie to be replaced I'll have it. The robe was a gift mind you though I did officially steal the ash tray.

I once saw a sign in a frame warning that if anything was taken the hotel would prosecute.

It was such a nice frame

It is now in my hall with a photo of my kids

I stay in hotels a lot and don't even bother bringing back the toiletries anymore...the novelty of freebies has worn off.

I did once accidentally pack a bathrobe I'd used and was (briefly) terrified I'd be charged or flagged up on the hotel system for nicking it - doubt they even noticed though

After finishing in my room, I waited in a friend's room while she finished packing. I was shocked to see her take a pillow from the bed and put it in her suitcase, so I just had to let her know how wrong it was.

Thankfully, it was actually her pillow, not the hotel's! As a frequent traveller, she takes her own pillow along, or she can't sleep. Phew!

Another friend, in that group, always travels everywhere with a pepper mill in her handbag!

Oh , and laundry bags. I always take them as I put my used undies in them so as not to soil the clean clothes in my luggage.

I may be a bit more light fingered than I originally thought.

As a natural good girl and rule follower (one or two glaring contradictions aside), I was genuinely mortified to find I had inadvertently purloined a corkscrew from a hotel room once. Straight to the firey pits of damnation for me clearly!

Nope, don't steal anything.

The only thing I take is the remains of any shampoo I have opened and used there, they only throw it away. If I haven't used it I don't take it.

At a works overnight conference ( at a very nice hotel at a famous golf course) , one of the guys nicked a full size framed picture. I think it was more drink fuelled than art appreciation !

I usually take my own toiletries, as I have sensitive skin too. The bathrobes are usually priced at some exorbitant price, should they be removed, and would not be worth it.

I wouldn't mind the odd bed but think they'd notice someone dragging it through reception.

I have a whole pile of Bvlgari bags from numerous trips on Emirates. Also find the Hilton pens very nice to write with so always stock up when staying! Lol

Over the rainbow, under the bridge

I've had the reverse. I took my own towels to Prague about 20 years ago and the maid nicked them! I complained and got two given me but they were not my originals. They couldn't track them down.

My ex had to go on a stealthy flit around a hotel in the states when he set fire to the microwave which he was using to dry his running shorts????? . What a pillock. Same hotel trip that his mate fell out of a third floor window and they accidentally drove a large army truck across a golf course!

I do take the toiletries as the boys take them for weekend camps - doesn't matter if they forget to bring them home.

I do have a knife from The Park Inn which we used to cut my cake last week

The usual toiletries, drinks sachets and biscuits, but we did find a home for a nice throw from a hotel and we have as a joke in the guest bedroom a premier inn purple bed wrap - that makes for a good talking point when guests put their stuff away lol

My friends son with us in Italy left the sink or bath overflowing, in our room above reception. Water streamed down the grand staircase, through ceiling cracks and was a nightmare. We grabbed as many towels as we could to help mop up - but not steal. We cried whilst with the hotel manager, we were distraught to think of paying damages. Needless to say we took nothing and left plenty.

Their insurance should have covered it in hindsight. Poor kid still can't live it down.

Used to stay in this B&B while working in Birmingham. Don't know why we stayed there so long because the owner was a right miserable bugger.

We didn't really steal anything but we did move his furniture about when pissed.

He used to have ashtrays all over the place blu tac'd down to whatever surface, we moved those all over the place.

He had a big whicker chair on one of the landings, we moved it two floors up. Ornaments, pictures, you name it we moved it haha

About a year we stayed there, he must have known it was us but didn't want to challenge us directly lol. He used to come into the breakfast room and say things like "I wish my furniture didn't keep moving about" and of course we never batted an eyelid
