The Town by The Cross

A sonic boom has been heard over various parts of the region after a typhoon jet flew over Leeds-Bradford airport.

A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves created by an object traveling through the air faster than the speed of sound. Sonic booms generate enormous amounts of sound energy, sounding much like an explosion.

An unofficial twitter account which monitors activity at RAF Coningsby says it believes the bangs were caused by typhoon jets.

Best place if you wanna catch on is top of a small mountain in Snowdonia.

They do low level training through the valley and they actually fly below you.... Occasionally one of them will be naughty and gun it

Since when does the RAF do that? I would have thought the CAA would be able to tell them.

I think its rumour mill time, but what's almost certain is that it was two planes going bloody fast.

Reading

I was staying at Tattershall Lakes last year, which is just near RAF Conigsby . Late one evening just before midnight 2 jets took off. Being late at night I know sound travels more, but the whole area shook. I asked next day and was told planes were on intercept. Found later listed on Internet . It is a 24 hour operational base.

But when they have permission, do they inform the public?

Also I would imagine that they have dispensation to break it without notification in a defensive emergency...ie going up to intercept the Russians...

As I posted earlier. The pilots male / female, when scrambled to take off, will have no idea what they are heading for etc. Planes are fully armed. I would think breaking sound barrier is last thing on their minds at that time. But to get to incursion area as quick as possible.
