Hey i know we have a lot of bikers on here has anyone done this course?
Looking into getting it done as ive forgotten nearly all my first aid stuff and i would be good to have some relevant knowledge for bike specific first aid.
Just want to hear from anyone whos done it and if it was worth it.

Yes - also helped to set up another type a while back.
Well worth it for those without a medical background.
The first 20mins literally are the lifesaving ones. |

When you ride round the corner and there's someone in the road...
FBOS is just that - it's usually (unfortunately) because the guy in front has gone down.
The point is that the first few minutes can mean them surviving or not. |

Ah I thought maybe they'd be alerted to nearby incidents to aid before paramedics arrive.
It's still a good idea, but I reckon the SMS alerts for nearby incidents is still so useful. |

I did "Bikerdown" and then used to give some parts of it, when it first started (was run by Fire and rescue guys then);
I guess this is something similar?
If so, then yes , every biker should do it |

Its only a course aimed at bikers focused on traffic accidents not like a community first responder job.
Its just that its likley that a biker will get to crash wuickly because either its his mate ona ride out or youve filtered to thenfront of the que

I think thisis done by fire and rescue to iirc.
On that note found out im gonna ahve to wait til after june to apply for RDS forefighter becays eof my eye surgery |

Gonna be doing some touring soon with some mates so want some basic knowledge.
My last first aid course was 4 years ago now rescue and emergancy care 2 with mountain rescue when i used to be into climbing.
Forgotten so much of it that i realised i no longer even knownthe first steps to making sure airway is clear etc |

I reckon you'd kick yourself if you witnessed an accident and lacked knowledge to help. I'd do it if I rode a bike. |

Exactly actually quite worried me that if were on the road for 2 weeks if something happens ill hust be stood there useless.

The bike specific one is very good;
1. What to do when first on scene:
2. Exactly what to say to emergency services on the phone
3. Controlling traffic/ taking charge of the scene until police/emergency services turn up.
4. Finding casualties ( eg if you see a bike and rider down, do you think to look and see if they had a pillion, who might be laying in a ditch? - or if there is another bike/ rider who might be in the ditch or gone through a hedge.
5. Basic first aid/CPR etc
6. Bike safety ( fuel spills etc)
7. Some first aid targeted at the most likely biker injuries
8. How to take off a helmet safely (normally you should not take a helmet off, but there are times when it may be necessary, and there is a specific way to do it safely )
9. Making notes/preserving evidence ( useful if there is going to be an investigation )
10. Make up of a good bike first aid kit (on mine, they gave out free first aid kits).

St Johns Ambulance do free courses for the general public, if your company decides against a corporate course. |

I've done driver First assist. Definitely a worthwhile thing for anyone who spends more time on the road than not.
Some invaluable stuff in there.
You can do these courses as part of DCPC. At least it's useful!

The helmet thing seems a contraversial one.
Speaking to some ER docs they say a lot of bikers die needlessly because people sre so terrified of removing helmets they are no longer able to clear and check airways and the bike will just quietly choke/drown/suffocate to death with everyone standing round non the wiser |

You shouldn't really change anything at the scene unless the patient isn't breathing. Your course will teach you how to remove it in those cases. |

First aid should be mandatory at school and whenever you do a driving test. It should also be mandatory to carry a first aid kit (I've one in my car and one stashed under my bike seat). Thankfully I've never had to use first aid but you never know |

You would be surprised just how much of it will come back to you in the event of happening across an accident.
Was first on scene at an rtc between a car and a bike around 10 years ago and got into an a rather heated argument with a gp that arrived, who wanted to remove the bikers helmet even though he was complaining of neck pain. My argument was if he was talking then there was no problem with his airway but she was adamant she wanted his helmet off.
It had been about 8 years since I had done my first aid course and was worried I wouldn't know what to do but it just seemed to kick in. |

If you have first aider training, it's pretty much covered. assessing the scene to ensure others safety is a key component.
Traffic and incident management are probably as crucial as first aid in any rta. |
