A program running on TV at the moment got me wondering what books may have had an effect on my life.
Lord of the Rings is one for me, it got me into Norse myths and took me into some very interesting directions that are still with me know some 30 odd years later and will be until the day I die.
The Bible is another, it made me realise at a very early age that God wasn't real (to me anyway..)
So what books have had an impact on your life and why? |

Just thought of another one. I don't know what it was called but it was a kids book on nature and how to watch wildlife and stuff.
It was full of cartoons of a funny man in a hat and wearing binoculars telling you little titbits of information.
It was a huge influence on me as a kid and I still love nature now.
I wish I knew what it was called. |

The ones that stand out for me are ..... An anthology of Old English poetry mad my brain create pictures.
Johnathon Livingston Seagull also changed my life by making me feel I wanted to be free in the same way.
The Glass Bead Game - Herman Hesse what a read that was, made me think a lot more.
The Ascent of Man, Bronowski, opened my eyes.
Mervyn Peak's Gormengash Trilogy, and Ben Elton's Gridlock, made me laugh a lot more.
The Bible, made me understand more about my own culture. The Korann made me understand more about my ex's culture.
But I think everything you read influences you in some way. |

Children on the Oregon Trail was the first book I read that totally absorbed me and showed me the power of writing to transport you to somewhere so totally alien to your own experience yet so authentic and so absolutely that it became "real" in my head. Already a reader at that point, it turned me into a life long reader for sure.
himself bought me a copy for Christmas...it cost a penny but to me is priceless. |
