"So anyone on here got one. What's it like to drive and have you had any cam chain problems."

I've had one a John Cooper Works 210 . Great little car drives like a go cart and very reliable.

O only used to get about 30 mpg out of it though but that was because of upgraded John Cooper engine.

Cams a chain so shouldn't really need changing. But super charger belt does and will be changed periodically in line with BMW service intervals.

Unfortunately although the cams are chain driven they do fail. It's the same engine as in Peugeot 207 thp just no supercharger. Chain just went on our 207 and it needs a complete replacement engine. I like the idea of the 8 speed autobus in the mini.

Rare for cam chains on.minis to go but obviously it not unheard of .

They do stretch though on high mileage cars but you can usually hear a stretched chain if it's badly stretched . Then obviously then needs replacing.

Our chain failed at 78000 miles despite proper servicing.

It's not rare hence the OP's question.

It's a well know weak point on them.

Great fun to drive, pretty poor mechanically given its origins.

I'd avoid unless you're dead set on one for some reason.

62 West Wallaby Street (not real address)

Not a fan of the BMW mini. It will never be a mini to me as I have owned 4 classic minis. Made me laugh when the BMW mini originally came out. The classic mini beat it on handling

"The BMW minis are crap mechanically "

What like they were awsome mechanically before?

Great car's but not very reliable.

I had a 1275gt and had to put a rubber glove with fingers cut off over the distributor cap, to stop water getting in and it stalling every time it rains.

I thought we were talking about a modern BMW not reminiscing on old times?

My tame mechanic calls them money pits

The OP asked about a Mini Cooper S, which was a proper Mini from the beer mat of Mr Issigonis, not the modern wardrobes with a Mini badge glued to their oversized bodies (you may guess which one I prefer, having had 2 mini 1000's, 2 1100 club mans and one of the last 1275GT's off the line, which I restored with a few tasty extras such as high lift cam and twin SU carbs.....must have been mad to sell it)

So they don't make Mini Cooper S now? Or the rarer cooper S works?

None of the BMW ones are proper and most of them are downright fugly

Along with the timing chain issues there's plenty of knackered supercharger problems too.

I do prefer the current colour range over the old one, British Leyland stomach bile beige-ish was never the nicest
