Barren, soulless, cultural wasteland... one of the most segregated cities I've been to in the US

i understand from hip-hop songs that gang-banging is popular, so that could be a plus

Read a Harry Bosch story by Michael Connolly, that might give you a feel for Hollywood and LA

if you want to do the tourist route try Manns Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel is where they first held the Oscars..

you could do a studio tour or go to Disneyland..

depends what it is you are looking for tbh

Non tourist, alternative stuff ideally. Though I think a day at Universal has been scheduled in the itinerary. Rollercoasters!!!

Non touristy stuff with very little prior knowledge is difficult in LA. But the last time I went i was staying with a friend doing a semester at UCLA.

Its probably a great place to live but a horrible place to visit, as I didn't enjoy my first trip there with my family when I was 17.

Having someone who lived there meant that we could do some really low key things such as rooftop movie screenings, crashing open houses for free mimosas, yoga in the park every day.

However, being a huge movie nerd, go on a studio tour. They're tacky and touristy, but i saw Emma Stone on the WB one and my 17 year old self couldn't handle it.

Central

I've never liked the place and visited a few times. Get out if you. Virgin America are a great budget airline who fly from there internally. Order your drinks and snacks via the seat screen, once you've left.

I did a tedious city tour, including celeb homes. Driving is a nightmare. Get away to the So Cal coast, possibly commute, even by air - I've used commuter flight services there.

Costa Blanca Spain...

"Get the fuck outta there - I loathe LA"

Ditto.

Probably the most over hyped city in the world, and just don't get me on about the fucking traffic.

North Bristol

Leave! Either North or South along g the coast is lush. Santa Monica is beautiful as is San Luis Obispo.

Venice beach is (was) good for people watching.

Did you ever see that Robbie Coltrane series.

He hired a convertible to go from Vegas to LA.

When he got there the local guy was shocked, he said nobody drives that road with the top down, there's hillbillies in the mountains that like to pop people in the head with high powered rifles

somewhere in the sticks

LA is beautiful if you know where to go…

The Getty Museum is amazing…as a piece of Architecture & because of its exhibits. They usually have a visiting exhibition & the one I saw was brilliant. Its up in the mountains & the view across LA is absolutely worth it.

The Huntington Library in San Marino is well worth a visit…they have work by famous British artists that you can't see here now…Gainsborough, Turner & many interesting artefacts that belonged to people such as Thomas Telford & James Watt.

Both places have wonderful gardens that are unusual because of their climate.

The Farmers market is also worth a look & has a fab view of Downtown LA.

Newport & Laguna Beach (PCH) are worth visiting as is Pasadena & Mission Vejio. Further away field Death Valley, Yosemite & Carmel (like Devonshire).

I don't like anywhere touristy & I'd spent a lot of time in LA before I found these places…it changed my mind totally about the place
