Oh I don't know! Next time you are in the middle of one and everything is wet, just take a second or two to gently blow cold air on the wet tip, if you are giving and see what response you get!  |

"I always thought it was a contraction of 'below' as in a below job being asked for of Victorian prostitutes. I may have my etymology wrong though."
Last I heard, that theory has been discounted; ( the guy who came up with that origin never gave a reference)
Best idea seems to be likening it to playing a wind instrument ; jazz trumpeters still talk of " having a blow"
( there used to be an old euphemism; "playing the pink oboe")
The French word is " piper"; which in old French meant to play a pipe, or whistle.
In German it's "blasen" ( which again is " to blow" eg a trumpet)
It seems almost every language uses a version of their word for blow....

As a reeded woodwind player myself I can pretty much vouch for the fact that the blowing technique is entirely different (although I have had some success applying various tonguing methods from one to the other). But please never call a trumpet a wind instrument, brass involves an entirely different embouchure... |
