Ice pack might help.

You can take ibuprofen and paracetamol together, but no other pain relief otherwise you will be overdosed.

The only thing that ever worked for me if had toothache was paramol. Although you cant take it long term. Either that or lying a hot water bottle (but thats really not recommended by dentists....but it helped me to drift off to sleep)

Hope you feel better soon x

Yes the hot water bottle works in the short term but inflames the abcess in the long term x

Oh no, that's the worst pain ever!

When I had it I was using vodka as a mouthwash to deaden it. On top of paracetamol and ibuprofen taken together. It barely touched it but was better than nothing.

(Do not swallow the vodka if you've taken painkillers! Although death would probably seem like a nice option about now. Hang in there.)

Unfortunately yes, but once i was asleep the waterbottle never stayed close long. Was just a helping hand to get there x

Cheers...it has calmed down a bit now and I think I have a half of a zopiclone in my tablet drawer...I'm off to look for that now x

Only thing if its an abcess is pain killers. Clove oil, orajel etc wont ease the pain

If the abcess/infection is bad they wont take it out until it has died down as they wont be able to numb the area

Antibiotics will help, hope you get it sorted soon

Had a tooth at the back split on me when I was 19, didn't cause any problems for a while and then got serious tooth ache. Had it drilled and filled and problem solved......

.......until the nobhead dentist during a check up blasted it with cold air for some reason!! Set off the worst tooth ache I've ever had.

Codeine only just made it bearable, nothing else ever touched it. Was offered root canal but preferred to just have it pulled out. Never want to experience that again.

And that's with having one of my front teeth split in half from being head butted!

Rinse your mouth, especially around the affected tooth area with salt water (a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of warm water (approx 235ml), but doesn't have to be that accurate).

Do this several times a day.

The salt water promotes healing and fights off the infection until you can get it sorted.

I have just had a wisdom tooth removed and this is what the dentist recommends, to help fight infection until it's healed in about a month. Painkillers such as ibuprofen can be taken with paracetamol, up to the maximum dose for each, but no other painkillers can be taken as well. Take them with food or just after. Do not take them on an empty stomach.

Hope this helps and you're pain free soon. x

I forgot to mention that you should not swallow this salty water afterwards. Spit, not swallow (in this instance).

Thanks for the good advice x I have put a tempery filling in for now and the mixture of paracetamol ibuprofen codiene and topping off with half a zopiclone really made the difference and I slept until bloody 11 this morning it has now settled down but no Sunday dinner today just warm soup and hopefully I will hang in there til Tuesday when my dentist reopens x

You can take codeine with paracetamol (eg cocodamol) and ibupfufen - they are 3 different classes of drug.

Cocodamol contains paracetamol, so it can only be taken up to the maximum combined amount of the paracetamol dose. When in pain, we tend to want to take everything and overlooking the paracetamol amount in different products leads to an overdose, not nice with even the common painkillers.

Hi its not cocodamol... that has paracetamol in it but codeine does not...docter told me its safe to take with the other two and thank god I had some in as it is a over the counter painkiller.

And thanks for the concern in your following post. x

The Town by The Cross

Take paracetamol.

Four hours later take Ibuprofen.

Use ICE PACKS not hot water bottles

Frequent salt washes to clean the mouth of bacteria will help until you get to the dentist.

DRASTIC.......

Pull it out with pliers and lance the abscess.

SMALL PRINT.... I take no responsibility for the following of any info in this post tho I believe it to be correct.

if you have already taken codeine based tablets and its not helping there isnt anything else without prescription you can take, thats as strong as it gets over the counter, only advice there is is get to the dentist

just to add to that have you tried nurofen plus as opposed to co codamol? the nurofen plus is ibuprofen and codeine instead of paracetamol and codeine which is usually better for things such as tooth ache as it's an anti inflammatory

You need some oralmorph or gabapentin. Toothache is generally nerve pain normal pal killers won't help. But both the above not available over the counter so just drink yourself into a stupor pass out wake up tomorrow
