Big Issue sellers are not begging.

It is a job.

They sell you a magazine.

I always buy the big issue from a guy at my local supermarket door, he also helps people load shopping in their cars and never takes a penny for it. He gives me a card every christmas.

Back when I was a poor student I used to buy the big issue off a guy outside m&s in Kingston. A few years later he was caught out by the NoTW, lived in a massive mansion and was loaded. So no, I don't buy the big issue anymore. He ruined it for genuine people as far as I'm concerned. Would rather give money to animal charity now

We always give. But its like a cup of coffee, or food. Never give them money.

Many Big Issue sellers are not homeless, but in unstable accommodation (private lets are known as unstable).

There is no need for anyone to beg as they receive sufficient benefits. If they are street begging it is most likely to be subsidising a substance dependency.

There are plenty of charities and church organisations that will provide food.

If you really want to help the homeless donate to the charities or churches.

little house on the praire

Ive spent alot of time with people that live on the streets. Its a said world but unfortunatly some are so used to it its how they prefer to live. As i said in the other thread i tend to give ciggies and a drink or chocolate rather than money.

Big issue, i buy and tell them to keep it and sell to the next person

Nah .... I think it was the sun , romanticism and the fact that she was as thin as a rake, as wrinkled as a wallnut about ninety and on her knees with her hands clasped in prayer.. I imagined that this was her occupation and that she earned more than I do and would float off home in an expensive car that I can't even pronounce let alone own ... but I gave.... you had to be there. Alcohol helps I find x

A very narrow minded forum post, shame on you!

People that sell the "Big Issue" stem from all walks of life, most have stumbled on hard times: Marriage break ups/Financial ruin etc...

What gives you the right to determine them as beggers?

Charity in my eye's begins at home - your association with "The Big Issue - Beggers" leads a lot to be desired.....

Go play with your toys - remember some of the Big Issue sellers could also be members on here.

"The Big Issue exists to offer homeless and vulnerably housed people the opportunity to earn a legitimate income."

In fairness to the OP, they did apologise for the reference to Big Issue sellers as beggers, although I am sure there is a lot more people who would say they are beggers and only because they don't understand the principles behind them selling it.

i.e. they buy the Big Issue from the distribtors at a lower rate than the cover price and then sell it for the cover price or whatever someone is willing to give them over and above it, the profit they then make is theirs to keep.

I think it is criminal that we have so many people living on our streets in what is supposed to be a rich, civilised country, you have to give to these people, if they choose to spend it on drugs to help them get through another cold, wet night, then so be it, hugz, Ruby, xxxx
