"today is the 21st anniversary of the Bradford fire when 56 innocents failed to come home from a football match at the valley parade stadium . never forget " Think you've lost track of time. Think you meant 31st anniversary. Terrible incident. Barely remember some of it.

"It was on Saturday 11 may 1985. You're a tad early but still what a terrible thing to happen" I don't know anything about the incident, but if it was 1985 that isn't 21 years ago!

"It was on Saturday 11 may 1985. You're a tad early but still what a terrible thing to happen" I thought I was going made until you said this... I thought Bradford was before... But had to double take myself

"Like hillsborough it's another case that needs looking at again. Terrible " I thought it was found that rubbish underneath the stands was set alight by a fag? Just shows you though it wasn't that long ago you could smoke anywhere.
"I remember watching this on the news, I can still see the older man running away from the stand with his hair on fire. It was an horrific day. Thinking of those families" I will think of them again on the 11th
"Like hillsborough it's another case that needs looking at again. Terrible " Most fans really don't want it looking into again. Let those that perished rest in peace, and be thankful that stadiums are so much more safe after the terrible events of that day. Always remember the 56.

I'm not sure if the fans do or don't want it looking at as its not something I have seen so I can't comment on that, what I do know is it was a visiting Australian called Eric Bennett that accidentally started the fire, he dropped a cigarette on the floor and as he went to stamp on it he realised it had fallen through a knot hole, he poured coffee on it to try to put the fire out and ran to officers for help, the officers also tried to put the fire out and then tried to evacuate the stadium, things being as they were back then meant that this was not easy and tragically things ended the way they did, in terms of Criminal charges then perhaps the health and safety policy back then needs looking at and maybe the company that maintained the stadium but I wouldn't know, as with other tragedys around the time due to smoking in public places it is at least something that was learnt from and new laws were put in place, as I say I don't know enough about it to know if it's right to bring charges but Eric Bennett has since died and I find it hard to imagine that he didn't take a lot of suffering to his grave and perhaps he didn't deserve too, after all he won't have been the only one to have dropped a fag that day, it just so happened to be his that started the fire, as others have said my thoughts are and will be with the families on the 11th may, Mrs blue eyes

I'm sorry I haven't seen anywhere that the detective reliability came into question, although this is not to say it hasn't been stated anywhere, Eric's nephew never gave an official interview and refused to comment about the day other than to say his uncle didn't do it, he never stated this whilst his uncle was alive, Eric Bennett gave a very strong statement of what he believed happened and the police state he was a very troubled man over the incident, now it maybe that it wasn't his cigarette, it may have been the person next to him, but the fire did start underneath him and everyone believed it to be a small fire, I can understand this at the beginning, it imagine it quite easy to think it's just a bit of rubbish burning, I suppose Eric Bennett thought it was him and his nephew didn't , perhaps it wasn't, but to find who actually did drop the cigarette would be impossible and it still shows that the fire was accidental, like I have already said perhaps some charges can be brought against the people responsible for maintains the ground as the rubbish had built up under the stands, but as with everything else at that time, this is how things were, stadiums were wooden, rubbish wasn't cleared, mistakes were made but those mistakes led the way too change, and are they really mistakes or just we didn't know better, like I say if I'm honest I don't know enough to know the real rights and wrongs and again my thoughts are with the families

I didn't actually say I know nothing about sorry, I said I didn't know everything, and that I hadn't heard some of the statements made here, but as I have said just because I didn't hear them or read them, I didn't want to say they hadn't been made, because I wouldn't know that for sure, I didn't google it, although I would imagine Google would be full of lots of various conflicting information, I just happened to take a little interest last year as it was the 30th aniversary, like I have said I don't want to argue that someone is right or wrong just because I haven't seen the points they make being discussed, I was merely commenting on it being an accident and albeit whoever dropped that cigarette the accidental fact still remains, had it been today and someone had dropped a cigarette then the matter would be different, due to the new laws, and as I have said perhaps the cps may look at a case against others in the maintainance side of things, who knows, I certainly don't, but like I said things were like that back then, it doesn't make it right but it does make it true, anyhow to be honest I apologise to the op as I feel this thread has been a little hijacked and I have played a part in that, as it was only a rememberence thread, I also apologise if my commenting without full knowledge of the terrible tragedy has offended, no offence was meant, sincerely it wasn't
