Well, there seems to be cool and all around the seal of the middle part of the engine. It's not liking fast but seems like it's been escaping for some time now.
Speaking to a friend and I've checked the engine cap, no gunk/foam on it.
I just want to know if it's going to be a big costly job no matter what is wrong with it. I've been told worse case scenario the head gasket has gone?
Ive tried to explain it to the best of my abilities lol but I'm not the best car wise

There's no visible crack at all, I thought it could maybe be the rubber seal that joins the top and bottom of the engine that has wore away??
my friends husband noticed it tonight as he was topping the oil up for me, but he's not great with cars either |

"Could be a leaky gasket or a split hose. Check the coolant level, look underneath for puddles keep a keen eye on the temperature gauge. If it rises stop immediately "
Just spoke to hubby, he said he doesn't know what it is. But was aware it's been like it for a few months. He said engine temp doesn't rise, there's never been puddles. But coolant level does seem to drop a lot quicker than it usually would. |

Wipe it all clean and dry on the outside, leave a dry clean rag wrapped around where you think the leak is from for an hour or so. Easy way to find out for sure, hoses can be replaced by you easily. Gaskets not always so easily replaced. |

check the two hoses that connect the engine to the radiator, one at the top and one at the bottom, they are favourite place for leaks.
What car is it by the way? |

Sounds like cylinder head gasket away,can be a costly repair if you have roasted the enginge,ie,having to get head skimmed etc,sometimes cheaper to get second hand engine fitted or get a new owner for it.

Golf would be more likely to be the water pump - known issue on their range of engines and should always be done on a cambelt service but is often skipped for £ reasons.

You need to figure out exactly where it is coming from, but from what you've said, it's likely to be the head gasket or water pump. Radweld type stuff won't work in either case.
Both will be a few bob to sort out, or if it's an old car anyway, just keep topping the coolant up and carry a big bottle of water in the car. These things never get better, it's just a question of how long it takes for it to get worse. |

Could be anything.
Depending where it is ?
It could be something simple like a split washer bottle or hose from the cold icey weather in winter etc .
Hopefully it won't be too serious for you.

Prestone do a head gasket repair liquid that you add to your expansion tank, it's actually very effective and considerably cheaper than the traditional way of repairing it. However, it will o ly work if you've not already cooked your head.

it is more likely,to be a rocker cover gasket than a head gasket,
head gasket would be more likely to leak water.
with a head gasket blown you will use a lot of water and you will see gray smoke out of your exhaust.
all cars will have some vapour coming out of the exhaust when they are cold.
but with a head gasket it would be a LOT of gray smoke,
as I say it sounds more like a rocker cover (or cam cover same thing different name)Gasket and that is not a big job.  |

Get yourself a good servicing, then when hubby comes back he can do the MOT, I'm sure if you need any maintenance after that all these 'mechanics' can sort you out...  |

I have one myself in "Norwegian tundra" paint scheme. Use a nail file to remove the rough parts from the polystyrene parts. |
