"Music icon Prince was “preparing to die for a little while” after being diagnosed with AIDS, according to reports in the US.
A music industry source interviewed by The National Enquirer messaged friends on April 19 to say the singer was suffering from the disease.
“He was in bad shape,” the source claimed to the newspaper, as reported by Radar Online."
.
National Enquirer & Radar Online?
Think I'll wait for the autopsy report, thanks. |

I think it would be big news if his death is found to be AIDS related. Hopefully it'll bring more awareness to the campaign, and maybe better financing/donations to charities like THT. |

Yes. It's an illness that I think is still taboo. It's certainly doesn't get the media coverage that other terminal illnesses get. |

But it's like those who refuse cancer treatment sometime the treatment is worse than the actual Illness. HIV medication is awful and has many side effects. |

Well, it's not necessarily terminal. But yes, it is taboo and it really needn't be. |

It's no longer considered terminal though as some go on to live long long lives....it's not the actual virus that kills you but the secondary illnessnes as a result of the virus |

It doesn't have to be awful anymore, many of the people I worked with during volunteering led high quality lives with minimal medical intervention. It has all changed so much even within the past decade. |

That to me is a more understandable reason to refuse treatment and to just control the symptoms then it being down to religion. Xxx |

Yes, I think that these days you very rarely will have a much lower life expectancy than anyone else.
The treatment has changed but I think that perceptions haven't.
It's not a bad thing though, the last thing we need is complacency about something like that. |

When someone dies at a relatively young age, the illness they died of is a matter of concern. Its not getting at someone to say they died of an AIDS related illness if, in fact, they did. |

My understanding was that life expectancy for newly diagnosed is almost unchanged. A few years different. That a twenty year old would expect to make their sixties and probably more. |

I was in America this week and there was a newspaper article about the length of time hiv positive people are living these days , and they were focusing on one chap who had lived long enough to get Alzheimer's.
It was hailed as some sort of achievement. |

It is an achievement in medicine. And it's likely that patient took his treatment seriously and took great care of himself, preventing various infections/cancers. |

If a thread can educate people about HIV regardless if it's true or not then that's something. I would rather have someone who has no clue about HIV be a little bit more educated about the virus after all people are so ill informed about it...that what worries me the most |

The op was merely stating what she had read/saw from a news outlet and an interesting thread has started from it.

"I was in America this week and there was a newspaper article about the length of time hiv positive people are living these days , and they were focusing on one chap who had lived long enough to get Alzheimer's.
It was hailed as some sort of achievement.
I suppose that is some sort of an achievement in loo of a cure being found xxx
I'm in the corner that they have already found a cure but too expensive for the open market but that's just MY opioion "
So drip feeding the cure in a watered down state so they don't die. Good call xxx |

I've written to administration to keep the thread open for purposes of balance and in support of freedom of speech
The thread has made clear it is speculation
What has also become clear is how some feel having aids is a taint on the man's life
This is a bad treatment of the disease
If it were speculated he died of heart attack or cancer I doubt there would be a call to have the thread closed
I'd suggest regardless of whether the Prince had the disease some of the comments regarding it's treatment are poignant

I've no idea what caused his death...it was only a couple of days ago the coroner said it could be weeks before the results of all the the tests would be in.
I didn't know the guy, however I always feel a tinge of sadness that a guy who was relatively young has passed as a result of whatever illness.. |

No, you're right. When I was volunteering, I only saw the early diagnosis stage or people not coping with overwhelming infections. It was an insightful documentary to see how those who were left after everyone passes deal with it. |

Yes. It's an illness that I think is still taboo. It's certainly doesn't get the media coverage that other terminal illnesses get. "
It's shameful if people still see it that way. I've lost two friends already to it. Dreadful illness.

I have HIV. I won't die from it. And I won't get AIDS.
I take medication - one pill, it doesn't make me ill, there are no side effects.
I cannot pass on HIV.
I am lucky. I live in the West and have access to healthcare, and I take my medication without fail.
If you don't take medication, you WILL eventually get so ill that contract illnesses that are AIDS defined, no one GETS AIDS, it is an associated symptom of UNTREATED HIV.
AIDS defining illness CAN be reverted with anti-retro-viral medication, even at the 11th hour.
In fact, a LOT of people only find out they are positive as they have become SO ill that they are close to dying and it comes up in the blood tests done at the time (i.e. otherwise healthy people going down hill uber fast).
For all the haters, or the uneducated, best thing you can do is just get tested. |

Sepsis always has an infection as an underlying cause. Neither HIV nor AIDS would be a direct source of sepsis.
It is perfectly possible he died of flu, or the flu developed in to pneumonia, or maybe his heart gave out because he rarely sleeps, or maybe it was anyone of countless other possible sudden causes of death |

If the media said it must be true... A bit like Facebook. People believe any old shit they see.
It matters not how he died or how he chose to live his life.
I'll be remembering the man for his talent and know that it is doubtful the world will see that again in a long long time.
I wasn't a big fan of his music. But the guy was a musical and lyrical genius. |

It hasn't even been proven that he refused medication, I mean he was spotted visiting a pharmacy regularly before his death. He wouldn't bother with one if he wasn't taking anything. |
