"Hope this thread just dies. "goodnight sweet thread, and may flights of angels sing thee to thy sleep" What is your favorite ? The fact a man (or men) was able to inspire and effect a whole language, the ability to swing from high art to vulgar jokes. And there's something pleasing about sharing this incredible body of work with everyone that shares this language. Quote, thread, or play? Yes get you google out Ok Why do you like it what inspires you about it ?"

"Shakespeare was like totes incred. He came up with language and shit He was an intelligent wordsmith and 400 years ago I'm sure he was fab " I don't know if he's all that. The've never asked him to make any sequels.
"Ohh and I've done 100's of hours of Shakespeare at school " Is that why you don't like it? I agree there is a problem with how it's taught.

Why that quote ? I'm happy others don't think it's shit, it's your choice " A comp next to an estate. As for the quote, dunno, maybe the rhythm? It's a fun use of language to day a simple thing, and most likely it one of the very few that have stuck in my dyslexic brain. I can understand people not liking it, but "pointless" was a bit harsh.

"Shakespeare was like totes incred. He came up with language and shit He was an intelligent wordsmith and 400 years ago I'm sure he was fab " Oh for a moment I thought you said he was on "fab". Would make an interesting twist to Romeo and Juliet.
"Not one car chase or a bird taking her top off ! Bit low on explosions too Sword fights and murder, quite a bit of sauce too if you stick with it" Hmmmm, maybe . Howabout if they got Dnny Dyer to beef up the diologue " 'ere Juliet , you slaaaaaaaag ! You've mugged me off like a two bob , intcha ? ! "
"Ohh and I've done 100's of hours of Shakespeare at school " I wasn't aware it was on the curriculum... There is currently a debate as to whether it should be taught in schools...

"Ohh and I've done 100's of hours of Shakespeare at school I wasn't aware it was on the curriculum... There is currently a debate as to whether it should be taught in schools..." Was in my school , I should never be, a bit like algebra (and I went on to do a maths degree) pointless

"Anyone like this pointless guff" I like Shakespeare. It's Charles Dickens I can't bloody stand. Why take damned bloody THREE pages to say what could be said in one damned bloody PARAGRAPH? Time is ticking, Charlie boy.... Get a bloody move on and just SAY WHAT YOU MEAN!!!! REALLY!!! I used to twitch so much in anger in my English Lit classes. So much so, I thought I was going to spontaneously combust.... Did I say I hated Dickens? I think I did....

I never understood Shakespeare, so didn't like it as a result. But now I love it. I try to go to see a decent production as often at possible; that's what gives it meaning for me.
"I enjoy Shakespeare's work. It's like Eastenders, back in olden times. Or TOWIE. Or MIC. " That's why I like King Lear so much. It deals with the issue of how to deal with an ageing parent, their assets, how it is bestowed onto the children and the consequences of those actions, which is still very relevant today.
"Anyone like this pointless guff" To some it is pointless and nonsense. To others he is England's finest writer. To some The Sun is pointless guff. To most sane people it makes excellent toilet paper.

"On my bucket list to read a whole Shakespeare play and get it. Dropped A level English Lit as one of the books was Richard the Third. It made no sense to me at all. Went to see it at the Old Vic...left as clueless as I arrived. I remember a Blackadder sketch where Edmund meets Shakespeare and whacks him on behalf of future generations of school children who have to study his work. " Try a comedy or Midsummer Nights Dream x

" If you've got an afternoon or an evening free in London then go to the Globe Theatre. Do NOT take the posh seats. Take the yard tickets. They use the crowd in front as part of the stage and you get involved in the production. Sometimes they even use the crowd as a prop in market/fair scenes! Magic! There's been quite a few Shakespeare plays I have NEVER read before seeing it performed there and I've picked up what's going on in less than 7 minutes. And even if you don't like the play, or its crap weather, then you can sod off to the pub. You've only lost a fiver for the ticket. Cheapest afternoon/evening out in London you can get.

But I was still one tortured kid! It was painful, I tell ya. Painful.... Lol
"who needs sequels when the originals are still going after 400 years." Spot on. Also, according to Shakespeare online, he contributed over 1700 words to the English language. I'm not 100% sure I even know 1700 words. Well done Mr Shakespeare! If you were still, about i'd definitely let you have a go on my Mrs.

"I don't know if he's all that. The've never asked him to make any sequels. " He did sequels Julius Caesar part 2: Anthony and Cleopatra Loves Labours Lost part 2: Loves Labours Won Henry IV Part 2 Henry VI Parts 2 and 3 Some of his plays were a bit meh (Twelfth Night, Two Gentlemen of Verona, Measure for Measure), but overall the Bard did pretty good.

The O.P. asked about Shakespeare and not liking him doesn't make them negative.

"I think the school system does Shakespeare an injustice. It should emphasise the historical and linguistic significance of his writing rather than trying to force his plays on those that simply will never enjoy them." Depends on the school/choice of study we were taught the linguistic significance of it. We also looked at that while studying Chaucer (whom I prefer) but I chose to take English literature not just English

I've always loved books, reading them and discussing them, even throughout my time at Secondary. We were made to study him from, what, the age of about 12 and he always, broadly speaking, didn't really turn me on(apart from when the teacher guided us to talk about context and stuff which removed the ball ache of wading through the text) until at least A level, and then at university and beyond. He is amazing, but unless you have someone gifted at unpicking him for you then students/readers are really missing out big time.
