"If we vote to stay in the EU then we should abolish St George's Day and adopt a national EUROPEAN DAY."
I've read some total bollocks on this forum over the years but that comment was probably the most bollockish I've ever read! |

Next thing we know, Boris and the rest of the Brexit people will be telling us that to stay in the EU we are going to have to drive on the right and that the UK will have to pay for all signs and road markings to be changed.
Scaremongering much? |

There's already a European national Anthem, Ode to Joy.
A European police Force, Europol.
And a European army, so a European saint would be par for the course. |

saints days are a biproduct of christianity which is a lifestyle invented less than 2000 years ago based on the premise on the offspring of a supernatural rape who was either a vampire or a zombie or maybe both. Come on people, this twat was supposed to have slayed a dragon which is ludicrous on two counts. 1. dragons are fictional and 2. if they were real st george would have been toast. The st george story is essentially racist as the dragon represents wales |

A female councillor wanted to ban red, white and blue bunting from being put up as part of the celebrations for the Queens birthday because she said it would offend foreigners. This country is going down the toilet fast.

Who cares about offending forgieners lol
I'd have it banned for the Queens Bday because the Queen doesn't give a shit about any of us. We are her "subjects". We're like dirt to her. Fuck the Queen.
Apparently the Queens collective wealth could end poverty. But she doesn't. That says it all really. |

While her comments seem bizarre and are probably being taken out of contest, she has a point that the far right have stolen the union jack and st george's cross. EDL and BF morons and their ilk desecrate it on an ongoing basis.

There is an old Welsh myth about the Red Dragon that sleeps in a cave somewhere and will return to save Wales again. Apparently it was defeated by a White Dragon. The Red Dragon was the symbol of the Welsh House of Cadwallader (I think, its late) and the White Dragon was the symbol of the House of Wessex, so it could easily be a mythologised version of the defeat and subjugation of the Welsh Princes by Æthelstan of Wessex. |

Just to cap and respond to all the anti 'St George's Day" posts above...
I was born 42 years ago yesterday, as I was born on St Georges Day it's always been bought to my attention either through family (as I have an old fashioned, traditional London born English family) or when I was at school it was always mentioned in assembly. Therefore I have grown in a world where the 23rd of April is a day of appreciation and celebration of who we are and the great country that we come from and it just so happens to be titled "Saint George's Day" which is also the title of our national flag. The fact that dragons are a myth (sorry if I've spoilt that for some of you) or whatever this bloke named George actually achieved or where he came from is irrelevant to me. All I know is there's a day every year where England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales celebrate there own national identity, and not alone as like many English people I have a pint to celebrate each and every one of them on their individual dates as I respect and embrace them.
So to all the historians on this thread who have attempted to further educate us with what they know or have read about the "true" and real "Saint George" not being "English" I really couldn't give a flying f**k to be honest as its just a title of the day I celebrate my identity! Being patriotic isn't a bad thing providing it's not used as an excuse to persecute others!
"St Georges" Day will always be celebrated in this household for the one reason, and that reason is that we are proud to be English!

And ethnically " British" are Celts, Romans, Norsemen, French, Saxons, Dutch, etc etc ( plus now significant other racial groupings from outside Europe),Bretons and Cornishmen are effectively the same thing; in the past "England" has " owned large tracts of what are now " European" countries; " we" are about as "European" as it is possible to get...... |

Surely Europe day would be international?
In Europe, Europe Day is an annual celebration of peace and unity in Europe. There are two separate designations of Europe Day: 5 May for the Council of Europe, and 9 May for the European Union (EU).[1] The latter is the EU's flag day and has a greater visibility. |

"If those that spend hours on end regurgitating Britain First shit all over there Facebook pages bemoaning that they are not allowed to celebrate being British anymore spent the time in friendly conversation with a few neighbours they could organise a party and celebrate being British!!!
What an extraordinary statement.
So are you lumping us that take pleasure in celebrating St George's day with a bunch of armchair neo Nazi's?.
Good grief!.
All we wanted to do was to celebrate St George's day, as we have all our lives, and pass on the salutation.
You need to chill a bit.

No, I don't, but it was a hell of a broadside! |

However hyperbolic the post was (and it was) they have a point. People seem to spend more time moaning about not being allowed to celebrate St Georges Day than actually making an effort to celebrate it. I don't recall any posts about St Patricks day or St Davids day or St Andrews Day generating these huge amounts of grumpiness. |

That's true.
Just enjoy the day and move on, tomorrow is just another day and some will find something new to be outraged about. |

Jesus, chip shoulder anyone?
I literally meant what I said and didn't lump you in with anyone.
I don't moan about people stopping me celebrating being English cos in the real world, no one does stop me.
I do have a barbecue every year, which I spend time organising.
I spent 10 minutes this morning deleting people from my Facebook list who, while I was having a few beers with the next door neighbours, spent their St Georges day filling my Facebook page with memes complianing about not being allowed to do exactly what I was doing.

The lamest attempt at trolling that I've seen for a long time. You could have at least tried something like:
I can't believe a local council (be careful not to name an actual place, as it will take 2 seconds for someone to check the facts) has banned St George's Day and instead are having a European Union Day. Total shame on them!
For bonus points, you can make it look like it is a copy and paste from those Britain First twats by typing it up:
I cant believe that councils banned st georges day!!!!!! and is making ppl selebrate bein European instead cos of all them muslimic asylum seeekers!!!! wot a joke!!!!! we didn't fight 2 world wars and 1 world cup 4 this!

Dear OP, given the unlikely success of your thread, I have revised your grade to 5/10. I still think that your troll lacks both style and subtlety, but there can be no doubt that it has worked. I still think that your work lacks refinement, but it does appear that people really are that stupid. |

"Ban idiots who want to ban stuff I say.
Were you one of the idiots who wanted to ban Donald Trump? "
You do realise this was said tounge in cheek, don't you?
I mean, you don't actually think I was proposing that people be banned from banning things, do you? |

If you are English, then you are by definition, a European.
Which origin of " English" are you?
Saxon? Norman? Roman? Celtic? Viking? German? Dutch? French?

Could have been me. Except I wasn't advocating that he should be and was just trying to pick apart a badly constructed point. Then I fell asleep.
Have no probs with St G. Or him being the patron saint of at least four other European countries. Not that I'm trying to smuggle a pro -European agenda into a thread or anything.

True(I agree), but that discounts an English cutural assimilation over time which is distinct from other countries. But yes, our ancestry and language(to name two important parts of national identity at least)are practically indistinguishable on some levels from other European nations.ANd probably vice versa.
