The other threads closed due to being too big before I could add my tuppence worth.
I don't really mean to be offensive, and I know it doesn't apply to them all, but I do find many Americans arrogant and ignorant of what goes on in the rest of the world.
And Obama'a latest antics really take the biscuit, and underline the fact that stupidity is obviously part of politicians' DNA, irrespective of their nationality. Did he not for a second grasp the irony and hypocrisy of this visit to the UK?
He has lunch with the Queen, our sovereign, and I know she has no real power, but then hot foots it over to Downing Street to meet the spineless Cameron, then makes a speech encouraging Britons to give up more of our sovereignty??
And have you noticed, any country with which America gets involved, in whatever way, and including Britain, they always have to have the lead role, the upper hand, they want to set the agenda which will always benefit them. But Obama thinks it's fine for Britain to be totally subjugated to Brussels?????

White House are distancing themselves from some of his remarks. The way he has treated our politicians during his time in office has been nothing less than scandalous. He won't be in office for much longer so whatever he says is not far off of being worthless |

Most Brexiters think Cameron will be toast if he loses this referendum he will be gone within days, so what you just said was a bit silly really. Whatever happens he will be stepping down before the next general election anyway. |

I don't see why if a central plank of the leave argument is they would be able to sort out a uk us trade deal quickly, then why should the president not be able to comment on that
It reminds me of when the scots nationalist were saying they would be able to keep the pound and get everything they wanted... And the chancellor and the head of the Bank of England said "ain't happening "
Just because the opinion is one they don't like it doesn't mean it isn't relevant
And what makes you think a Clinton administration is going to be any different... She would likely keep the same people in place in the important positions |

It's just more stuff Brexiters talk about with zero knowledge of the practicalities. A realistic timeframe for a trade deal with the US would be five years at the fastest. On the other hand, they seem to think it's just like splitting the bill in a restaurant! |

If what Obama has said is of such little consequence, why is the Brexit camp getting so stressed up about what he says..?
seems to be the same reaction to the other people with experience (as opposed to us lot) in the real world of geo politics, trade, finance etc who share the same views that a leave vote isn't going to be plain sailing and will be different to what the lead people in the leave camp are saying..

To be fair I think the Brexit side can be forgiven for their confusion on this point. Let's not forget that many of them are Uskippers, and as the UKIP MEPs they voted for refuse to take part in any EU voting, preferring to just pick up the cheques instead, they won't understand that it's a democratic process.  |

No, he's got it right. If you are able to see things in a nuanced way, rather than thinking everything is black and white, you may be able to understand that something needing reform to make it more democratic does not mean that it is currently undemocratic.
Further to that, you may then understand that people who want to make an organisation more democratic realise that to do so you need to remain a member of that democratic organisation.
On the other hand, Michael Gove would prefer it if you stayed at home with a tea towel over your head and a copy of the Beano from 1962. That's the way to improve the EU! |

You do realize that I just took the exact words from the OP and changed it from American to British, right?
Having lived in both countries (lived, not visited or worked) I can tell you that the percentage of ignorant and uninformed in both countries is about on par. Threads like these, and many of the comments on them, just solidify the truth of that for me.
I just think that in the US people are more honest about their ignorance. People here refuse to believe it about themselves.

Sorry what you just said makes no sense at all.  Seems par for the corse on your comments though, first you say it's democratic, then it's undemocratic because Jeremy Corby said so and now it's democratic again? It's either democratic or its not, you really need to make your mind up. |

Its being reported A senior Whitehouse official said he "winced" when Obama said Britain would be at the back of the queue for a trade deal. So it does appear the Whitehouse are trying to distance themselves from Obama's comments.
Nigel Farage also pointed out Americans never use the word "queue", they say "back of the line" instead. So could it be that Cameron told Obama what to say and it was all pre-scripted by Cameron? |

You're free to disagree with Obama, of course, but calling him 'stupid' shows a bit of a disconnect with reality. He's a deeply intelligent chap.
It's a shame that the truth hurts - leaving the EU is going to put us at a disadvantage in trade and hurt our economy. Brexiters can go on about these amazing deals we're going to get, but it's pure fantasy. |

Or, a simpler explanation, Obama wrote his speech with a British audience in mind. I highly doubt Cameron can tell Obama to do anything. |

Of course it was pre-scripted. They all have speech writers and of course they rehearsed it all before the day. Why would they not? |

Excellent point, and once people grasp this fact they can begin to see Obamas comments for what they are. The US uses the UK to suit its own ends and we hang on their coat tails to suit our own purposes. We do not need to be friends with them to have a trade deal in place quickly which suits both countries purposes. |
