Why is retro gaming so popular? Is it because modern games lack gameplay and are focusing too much on DLC and micropayment?

Or maybe because it reminds us of our childhood and brings back memories?

Right, I'm off to play Sonic

think it also helps that retro game were a commitment, with no saves so you had to play through.

Maybe because they were simpler, something you could pick up and bash away at for a short while for uncomplicated fun rather than modern games which involves vast amount of information and involvement.

Also there is the nostalgic factor as noted by the OP.

As a child of the 80's, it's when you realise that kids these days are calling games from the PS1 and 2 retro that gets me! GTA3, vice city and San Andreas are now all considered retro, yet I remember them all coming out-GTA I remember seeing for the first time, top down graphics and a little red blob for blood back in 1997 and GTA:SA I remember picking up in my 2nd year of college in 2001. I tried introducing my kid brother to sonic and he looked bored, and went back to battlefield. So I tried to point him to the original battlefield set in 1942, but trying to find all the updates and patches it needs to play, he again went straight back to the modern stuff.

I think more emphasis was put on the gameplay back then as there were graphical restrictions to the older consoles. One of the simplest games ever I think is one of the most addictive I've ever played - Tetris.

Been a gamer for many years from the atari up to modern day consoles.

Game play was the focus and things just were simpler back then.

Streets of rage was classic and the original tekken was mind blowing when it first came out. A button for each limb.

Still have fond memories of multilayer soccer manager on the spectrum 128k

think the other appeal is once you've completed it that's it no more extra content or side missions.

"is Crash Bandicoot and Spyro 'retro' yet? "

I would class It as retro now, it's three generations old in console terms.

I can see that. I'm a child of the 80s too. Still love playing the MegaDrive sonic games, streets of rage, world cup Italia 90... I play modern games too (totally addicted to fallout 4 right now).

I tried going back to some late 90s/early 00s games like soldier of fortune, vice city and the like, but just didn't enjoy them. I loved them and spent hours in them at the time, but that era sits just in the wrong poi t of oldskool simplicity and modern immersiveness.

Hated that game. I was crap at it and it was the one game my sister was good at. I can still hear the "paralyzed an ant" sound...

I agree with the game play comments. The machines couldn't do bugger all graphics wise so the writer's energy and imagination had to go into gameplay. So usually something which looked simple could be both very complicated if needs be, and also very rewarding(and took ages to get anywhere near to getting within a sniff of being completed).

Don't think I ever completed a single Speccy game, yet still kept coming back for more!

What's the best Spectrum emulator out there then? Got itchy fingers..

Just completed Tomb Raider on my Xbox One and was really good modern rendition of the old classic.

Old games were cool, loved Sensible World of Soccer on my old Amiga..... It used one button on a Kempston 5000 joystick but was quality

Very much agree with this, old games were much better in my opinion, as they did require a huge amount of imagination on the developers part in order to successfully create a convincing fantasy within the confines of such limited technology, most games today feel exceptionally bland and uninteresting by comparison.

Google world of spectrum, theres a games archive and lots of emulators on there, hard to recommend one as all are quite similar just different user interface , personally always found spectulator to be quite good (think that's how you spell it) for windows

I thought Target Renegade was better than the first one, but the first one is still brilliant today. The time traveling 3rd one was just OK

All new games are caters to online play and are super competitive. Offline gaming lacks depth these days so older games are popular because their was no online gaming back then so the games had so much more to do

Even the latest GTA was lacking. It didn't take long to complete compared to San Andreas for example (best game ever IMO) The online for GTA was very good but then the matchmaking turned shite and it became hard to find good lobbies. I've not played it for fucking ages!

World cup Italia 90! Even now that name fills me with dread. I hate football with a passion and someone bought me that game. My dad was never off my mega drive when that came out!

As for the gta comments, well I'm about 30% complete on Gta3 for ps4 now.
