One of my pet hate is the word "surely", as it implies the person who says it is in some way more correct than the others.
It is one of the words I was taught not to use so as not to wind people up when performing audits or in any discussions. |

Oh bugger, I meant "wince" and not "winch", my bad!
May I plead English is not my first language for making that mistake? |

Agreed. I also hate it when people say "of" instead of "have", i.e. "You should of gone to Specsavers" |

Other words that can wind me up are "obviously" and "evidently", again, they imply the person who says them is somewhat more superior than the others. |

During a training course a few years back I was taught that if I was late for a meeting I should not say, "Sorry I'm late" but rather, "Thank you for waiting" because the former is apologetic and leaves you in a submissive position (their words, not mine).
What a load of bollocks, eh? |

I hate when people get lend and borrow the "wrong way round" - for example "I need to lend some money" when really they havent got a stash of cash to dish out - they actually need to borrow some! x |

he/she turndaround and said (they must be dizzy with all the turning)
"or so i've been told" (usually following on from "good looking" "great sense of humour"
the most loathed words for their mis-use are 'hate' and 'fatal'...especially if my computer crashes and the error sign tells me i've made a fatal mistake....how guilty do i feel knowing that someone has dies because i pressed f1 instead of f2?!

Well the phrase "to think outside of the box" really irritates me and seems to be quite popular - mainly with complete arseholes.
I have opted to never use the phrase "each to their own" on this forum.

I do worry about the statement " . . I have never had any complaints . . . " when seen on a male's profile. I can just imagine a woman pushing the guy off her and stalking out, shouting : that was f*king awful, I want a refund . . .

Something that always thought was bad grammer but now being increasingly used by newsreaders on the BBC ".... an horiffic ...."
I always thought you only used "an" before a vowel eg. an egg. |

An is acceptable before a silent or weak H. So that's still correct grammar. |

The use of the word random to indicate there has been a switch in conversation following a lull. It's just another subject as far as I'm concerned and a lot of the young people I work with squawk 'oh that was pretty random'. Isn't that the art of conversation - or can't they take in too much subject matter these days? |
