Either see if you can connect in 5ghz or switch the channel it's using within the router.
If her phone is cordless then it'll be on 2.4ghz just like the wifi, Bluetooth, PS3, etc |

The RF from wifi routers generally radiates down, so get that ugly blinking box as high as possible.
Old microwaves and striplight transformers can spew noise interence also, so avoid these in line'o'sight.

"ok, have a look in your event log veiwer to see what happens when your signal drops out. it will give a good indication of what's going on. out of curiosity what anti virus are you using?"
avast ..free version |

If it's happening when using the phone, it's most likely to be a Filter problem. Every device (phone, broadband router, sky box, burglar alarm etc) needs to connect via a filter.
A filter is a little box which plugs into the phone line and splits the analogue signal from the digital signal. If you haven't got one on a phone, then the phone will use the whole cable as analogue.

I'd certainly check the filters first especially as....

You need to narrow it down on whether it is a wifi or Internet issue, try plugging a cat5 cable into the router and laptop and see if the problem persists. If it does then it is a problem with the Internet, as others have said it is probably down to a faulty filter or a filter not plugged into each wall socket at the property, if the problem goes away it is a wireless quality issue, is your router dual band and your laptops support 5ghz do you know? |

Unfortunately, the good ole' microfilter is still very much a part of "most" ADSL based internet connections. If it comes through a phone line you'll need filters unless the actual phone line has been replaced.... in which case the phone sockets on the wall will have two sockets instead of one.
Certainly in my neck of the woods it's the norm.

or better still if you disable avasts firewall and just use the windows firewall .... i highly recommend checking your event log veiwer for DNS errors .... i'm betting you'll find ipv4 and/or ipv6 teredo tunneling issues. this will be avast closing ports off randomly.
there's been a lot of people with this issue over the last year and the support from internet service providers hasn't picked up on it. they get you to change router channel, replace filters, routers, send out engineers to check the lines etc all to no avail. they wanted to send a guy out to us to check for rein (Repetitive Electrical Impulse Noise) and shine (Single Isolated Impulse Noise) but i sussed the problem before that happened. |

oooOOOOooooh someone's best friends with Google... (other search engines are available.)
The fact it only seems to happen when the phone is in use doesn't really point to a DNS or firewall issue.

No micro filters required round here for a while, since the network went digital.
We then started fitting "ADSL2000" socket faces, (yes, they have two ports, one for phone and one for t'interwebby), and now we have upgraded to fibre its got yet another new socket face.
Never thought mid Wales would be at the "cutting edge" of technology lol! |
