What is a sauce?

At breakfast at a hotel yesterday, and asked for some mustard to go with my sausage sandwich, and was told they only have sauces and not mustard.

So I replied mustard is a sauce, and the lady looked at me as if I was from another planet.

Since she was the only person about and the place was busy, I let it pass and went for some brown sauce instead.

I noticed there was no ketchup sachets in sight, however, since I do not like ketchup, I did not mention it to her.

The hotel is part of a chain, and I have not stayed in this one before.

The one I usually stay at while I am up near Chams is lovely by comparison. They would go and fetch me some mustard sachets without any delay from the lunch/dinner condiment trays.

Ooo, back to the OT, sauces come in red, brown, yellow and white for me!

And my neighbourhood burger/breakfast van knows what I mean when I ask for yellow sauce to go with my bacon sarnie!

The Forest

I think that mustard is known generally as a condiment, and that yellow stuff on burger vans may be a distant relative in sauce form.

Mustard is a paste Pearl.

You can get mustard sauce but it's called mustard sauce.

Mustard is just called mustard.

I don't know, just came to my mind, as I like red current jelly with roast duck, and thought it would go well with other poultry, that's all.

I believe I caught her at a bad time, and had the place been quieter, she would have got some for me.

That's what I thought anyway.

A sauce is a fresh serving, often cooked with the food.

A condiment is a preserved or a fermented item (eg tomato sauce is a condiment.)
