On a recent thread about Tom Cruise(TC) I bemoaned the fact that he had murdered the character of JR at the cinema.
My understanding is that TC or his production Co obtained the film rights to the character in order to make the film. Then casting himself in the role.
He must have either thought he could pull it off, which is a bit strange as JR is a little taller than TC.
Or maybe he-TC got his hands on it to stop anyone else from starring in what could possibly have been a multiple franchise.
Google JR or books sold about him to see what I mean.
What do you think? |

I think he saw a popular character in a popular book series by a popular author, and saw a potential popular film series that had the potential to make him loads of $$$.
As for him starring in them, it means one less person to pay a big fee to.

"I thought he was brilliant in it and I really enjoyed the film.
But then I didn't read the book"
Tom Cruise and Brilliant just don't go together. Aside from the fact that he has one facial expression and Top Gun is vastly overrated, I vowed never to watch another Tim Cruise film after he murdered vanilla sky.
I would literally put vanilla sky forward as the worst film ever made... ever. |

It's about generating money.
Like him or not, Cruise is box office, he's a guaranteed return on investment regardless of whether he appeases the book readers or not.
Personally, I like him and admire the career he has had. There aren't many Hollywooders who can boast a 25 year plus CV.
He's in the elite, and for me, deservedly so. |

Yes I see your logic, but he has effectively killed off the chance of any future JR films. as someone(amongst millions) who liked the character I feel a certain sadness. I know films are rarely as good as the book and this was certainly the case with TC in the lead role. |

Wouldn't watch the film, I was so disappointed to hear he was playing Reacher. A lot is made in the books of Reachers stature. Nothing like cruise.
But then I find books are much better than a film anyway! |

He is an entertaining man and performer. People like entertainment. That's all it takes.
As a film fan, I'm grateful he is around.

Can't disagree either, his character of ethan stunted in the abysmal MI films deserves credit for making money. |

Well the Americans need their own knock off of James bond don't they. You could have put a monkey in that role and they would have paid to see it. |

Never read the books and know bugger all about them, taking the film on its own merits I quite enjoyed it, there are certainly worse films out there. Plus it has Werner Herzog in it, gains bonus points just for that alone |

I'm a big fan of the Jack Reacher series and can't imagine TC as Reacher.
I did however treat the film as a totally different vehicle with a vague resemblance to the book One shot. In doing that I put my preconceptions to one side and enjoyed it for what it was, a decent action film. |

Have to admit born on 4th July was an excellent film but can't think of any other tom cruise films that are worth remembering.
As for jack reacher. Easy, entertaining, action filled books. With the main character an unpredictable man mountain.
So far removed from the tom cruise version. |

Nah. He can do at least three: smug wide grin; frowny serious; and sometimes he attempts angst.
You could argue a fourth with the terrible moustache from Born on the Fourth of July.
Shit. I forgot 'jokey',. Which is also smug.
Agree with the Vanilla Sky comment.Original was mind blowing, innit. |

I can see if your a Tom Cruise fan and have not read the books then I can see how the film would be seen as ok.
But for those of us that who hoped against hope that if the character ever came to the big screen that we would have a hero to equal our expectations. Then we have been sorely disappointed.
but not for the first time eh? |

The Jack Reacher books are good, fun reads.
In the books a lot is made if Reachers size and strength and intimidatory nature. Lee Child mentioned that Reacher was a Lawrence Dallaglio size and shape, so, for me, Tom Cruise isnt up to the role and the film was all the poorer for casting him. |

Exactly, Reacher is massive and has a commanding presence in any situation. Cruise isn't and hasn't. |

I believe he cast himself
A sam Elliott type would have been much better. given the current time I perhaps would have in mind "tom Hardy" for the role. any other suggestions? |

Tom Cruise fan, haven't read any Jack Reacher books, but I did buy the DVD. Watched it once and gave it away to the local second shop, the film was just bland
Cruise has done this before, squeezed himself into roles that aren't necessarily suitable for him..Interview with a vampire was the other. |

TC loved the books, bought the rights and cast himself, if he had changed the name of the lead character, nothing would have been said.
I can't think of anyone past Elliott to play the role as I imagine Reacher with a deep Voice. Can't see Hardy or Hiddlestone in the role. What about the Jock actor in 300? Can't remember his name. |

Yes quite right I wouldn't be moaning if he made a film with a different character name. but I still regret the loss of an opportunity to portray JR in the same light as the books. that opportunity has now been denied to anyone else. |

ha.
Or due to someone suggesting that we're all not unutterably thrilled at having to 'admire' his derring do and brogadaccio for insisting on riding a bloody motorbike in yet another film. We GET it Tom.
He's like a much less talented Brad Pitt. Thing is that lad doesn't mind laughing at himself, bless him(ie Burn after Reading for one). |

"Ahhh, Jack Reacher, the guy every man would like to be like and every woman would like to fuck."
Well said the man in the book is a walking mountain who deals his own sort of justice. Drifts from town to town with little more than the clothes he is stood in. Great character. Shame they could not have used Eric Bana or some one similar. |
