The closing of leisure centres to save money

My local government is meeting up next week to discus closing 3 local leisure centres. One of which has a swimming pool and and olympic standard gymnastic gym and the centre has just been done up.
This means that I and others that dont have a car will have to spend 1hr on a bus to get to another leisure centre and thats not that easy to do and fit in to a busy life.
I can uderstand the need of the local government to save money but people also need to have a place to get and keep fit and meet up with other people. I can keep fit at home but that does not seem to work as well as the gym for me.
What do you think about the closing down of leisure centres or any other savings your local government plan to make |

Imo, the key word in your post is "leisure". If my local council felt they had to close leisure related services in favour of keeping essential services going, I would support it and organise jogging groups or similar. |

People will be moaning about kids on street corners soon .....
A working capitalist democracy understands a moral citizen led trust in the system ...the true meaning of Camerons "big society"...the breakdown of communities, by closing the means of support of each other harms the counties fabric is so many ways that can`t be seen on a bottom line .... |

The nasty party are back in charge and this time with their pet poodle holiday man Clegg in tow.
And as ever their first thought? Hammer the working class.
What is so sad in Comedy Dave's"Big Society" is we are now Europe's fattest nation and there is a never ending problem with the youth having nothing to do.
And Dave's answer is to close gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres. When is he going to see a link between the strain that will be put on the NHS because of obesity and a reduction in opportunities for people to get some exercise.
Very short-sighted.

here in Leeds several leisure centres have been shut down by the council, these are not old facilities purpose built back in the 1980s
soem reopened for a whild due to community pressure, then closed again, my local one was one of these, a local community group has enough financial backing to rent teh place from teh council refurbish it, and run it and make a profit, offer made to council on teh councils terms was recjected, its now borded up an becoming derelict,
i guess the council see more short term profit in demolishing it and selling the land fo0r development which i think is the aim
they also closed and demolished our 'International pool' locally known as the 'Olympic baths' reason being it was a few inches smaller than olympic standard sized due to a 1960s building company screw up
did not stop Adrian Moorhouse training there though |

Where I live the council basically stopped maintaining all the local pools and built a brand new one 2 years ago at great expense.
Which surprise surprise may now be under threat and is already less well used after the cut in free swimming for over 65s and under 16s.
No doubt in Dave's newly-slimmed down NHS obesity wont be a problem any more. Or will it... |

Shutting down Libraries, Youth Clubs, Youth Services etc. etc. and looking for community voluntary groups to run the services instead !!!
Also, meals on wheels huge price increase, stopping Lollipop Crossing services and withdrawing Explore card for young people to get discount bus fares.

My gym, which is attached to a sports centre was told to save some money, so instead of opening at 6am they now open at 9am.
So they've lost the pre-work gym goers and, well, have lost money because of their need to save money.
Erm.
There is, i think, little sense left. |

Better get used to it folks ,the ordinary decent citizen is gonna get clobbered big time by this coalition, its what the tories hve always wanted, decimate the public sector and give the ripe plums to their backers,it couldnt have worked out better for them if they had tried.
Here,s how it works ,give our money to the banks, privatise everything and their mates can borrow our money from the banks ,buy up all the public services, with our money ,and keep the profits.Any existing employee,s will be paid a pittance and their pension reduced and if you dont like it ,then tough ,makes you proud to be British. To the lady who stated they are getting a new leisure centre i would suggest the contract was too far gone to cancel it , securing funding to keep it open will be the tricky part in the future ,or maybe they,ll just sell it for peanuts to one of their backers for profit,Sad days lie ahead for many,at least we have a great climate tho |

i think that came out as part of an employment tribunal ( or something similar ) related to women not being paid the same bonuses as men within a city council . The electrician, and bin man as well I think, had a usual wage but could earn many times more via an accumulation of bonus payments. That's whats in my head anyhow ...i'll see if i can find the story. |

So which bit of that article suggests he's "the highest paid public service employee in the country"?
Just to save you looking - it isn't there.
£124,000 is a lot of money but he's a long way from being the the highest paid public service employee in the country. |

There are 2 lesure centres (both council run) within 4 mles of each other here - one has a swimming pool and the other one doesn't.
Despite the faclities being there, both centres are very very underused, so to be honest if Northumberland County Council said they were going to close them both in favour of diverting funds to something which would be of greater benefit to the community, then I'd be in favour of them doing it.
Of course it will impact some people, but probably a lot less than will be impacted when the CAB closes due to lack of funding. |

She`s alive and well with Conservatives Way Forward ...a right wing Tory think tank ...she`s president ...Tebbit holds the chair ....
The closure of CAB`s is morally indefensible, given the difficulties alot of the vunerable are going to face .....
I accept cuts..given the lack of enthuasism fer hitting the wealthy ...but some services should be ringfenced as fundamental to society ....CAB`s and libraries chiefly amongst them.... |

Bexley are cutting 1m from the library services and seem to be dismantling the adult social care programme piece by piece.
they also seem to be quite content for local businesses in Sidcup to go to the wall as morrison's ride roughshod over the town.
yet two plans that would have provided a few hundred jobs were blocked by Bexley Council |

Libraries are the hub of community groups ....how in gods name is closing them defensible ?..
I dunno ..just the basics of living like taking a pee in a public toilet or reading a book are no longer seen to be part of civilised society ....
This strategy of a 4 year plan to cut the deficit isn`t community friendly is it ....
Don`t start me on supermarkets and out of town shopping "malls" ...homegenous Disneylands that have robbed our town of nigh on anything commendable...along with any diversity has gone all the jobs .....the local rag was full of letters of complaint. as were the public meetings ....all the fears were realised ....a dead town centre ...no jobs ...and no circulation of money t`ween traders etc ...fucking nuts ...
Rampant consumerism writ large....without any ownership by the citizen I would suggest...
Anyhows lol.. |

Cameron ordered all councils to make cutbacks. He didn't specify where they should be made as that is best left to those in the areas concerned who know their communities better than he does.
What has happened, in reality, is Labour-run councils have cut services that they know will provoke a reaction instead of finding the savings by eliminating waste, and their own fat-cat salaries.
It's politics and the people who will suffer are the constituents of those areas where Labour have cut vital services to score a political point.

Torbay is a Conservative run council...
The cuts are coming in Care for the Elderly, Refuse Collection, Street Cleaning, Tourism Advertising, Public Transport.....they have even completely taken away the £120,000 annual grant that runs the Domestic Violence Agency.
South Hams is also a Conservative run council.....They have just announced that they are cutting funds to their Tourism Agency by half, a 30% cut in Elderly Care and a 25% cut in after school clubs funding.
So not all Labour run councils....as I am sure you already knew

Cameron DIDN'T order all council to make cutbacks because he can't ORDER councils to do anything.
What he did and will continue to do until he's stopped is curtail the money from central government to local government.
He DIDN'T specify where cuts should be made because he CAN'T tell local authorities where to cut.
Even if he COULD tell local authorities where to cut, he wouldn't 'cos then the blame would sit squarely on his slopey shoulders.

Tourism Agency is not an essential service and a 30% cut in care for elderly is easily achievable, and as for after school funding - well, that's why kids have TWO parents, if they breed them then they should look after them, I've got two kids and we've always got by ok.
The fact of the matter is the country has got to save money to cut this huge debt we've been saddled with and if all services are deemed 'essential' where are those cuts going to be found? Something has to go however unpopular it is. Perhaps that should be remembered the next time Labour voters hover over their pen over their candidate come election time. The blame lies squarely with the last government - and that is a fact that cannot be denied. |

If you live in a region like the West Country where the largest single industry is the tourism industry then of course it's bloody essential!
We don't have a big manufacturing base down here, and with up to 20% of the local population employed in some way in the tourism industry, and countless other jobs that depend on tourism then it is every bit as essential as any large factory is to another region.
Are you being deliberately awkward Wishy?, only I am pretty damn sure you know these things already. |

All politicians are despicable lying toerags only interested in themselves and power, whatever party there in.If they were legally obliged to carry out their manifesto pledges with the threat of impeachment if they didnt then we as a nation might just begin to get somewhere and we as voters may feel someone was paying us some attention over the lifespan of a Parliament instead of conning us with their usual false promises prior to being elected then blanking us for another 4 years |

How is it a lie that Brown preferred to spend spend spend than save save save?
He stated it publicly on national TV that the only way our of the recession was to keep spending. Well that's been proved wrong as we are out of the recession due to Osbourne's handling of our finances. He's done a fantastic job in my book, and I'm quite happy with the way the coalition has done things since last May, although I do concede that Cameron needs to toughen up a bit. |

Friday's official data showed Britain's economy shrank by 0.6 percent between October and December, surprising analysts who thought last month's preliminary estimate of a 0.5 percent contraction would be unrevised.
Britain's Q4 performance looks dismal compared to its peers. Germany's economy expanded by 0.4 percent over the period and even France managed 0.3 percent growth. U.S. GDP figures on Friday showed annualised fourth-quarter growth revised down to 2.8 percent from 3.2 percent.

The recession is over but we're by no means entering into a boom period. We still have a ways to go before then, but it certainly doesn't feel as bleak as it did two years ago. The recovery is very fragile sure, what with such low GDP figures, and it could easily tip back into recession (when there are two successive quarters of negative growth, but I'm sure you know that).
Good job Cam got rid of all those boats and planes we didn't need and are expensive to run. And all those bogs in Manchester for people to urinate all over apart from in the actual toilet (and there's loads of McDonald's around who have very clean toilets for people to use) |

If the figures for the next quarters show a contraction then yes, we're back into recession. We both know what defines a recession so you can pluck figures from wherever it you get them from but you can't say we're in a recession on the basis of a one quarter contraction - it needs two, that's the yardstick and you know it. |

And? Those useless islands cost British lives to keep. Where's this oil that was supposed to be underneath them?
Thatcher only sent a task force down there as she was down in the polls and needed something to rally behind. The Argies provided it for her at a most timely juncture, and it saved her bacon at the subsequent election.
It was certainly not a war that should have been fought, if it can even be called a war. Those lives were wasted for an election. |

The warship they sent to Libya to rescue the trapped Britains (HMS Cumberland).....was actually on it's way back to the UK from the Persian Gulf for decommissioning at the time....because the Tories thought it surplus to defence requirements.

It's not being used in defence, it's being used as a ferry for stupid Brits who went to work in a country run by a madman.
So it got a final job to do on it's way back to the knacker's yard. Big deal. |

"Agreed, we don't need those boats and planes......hold on, what's that?
The Argentinians are rattling their sabres about the Falkland Islands again?
ooooops!
Those lives were wasted for an election."
I lift this from wiki because it sums up the situation perfectly and it's quicker than typing it out.
"Britain was initially taken by surprise by the Argentine attack on the South Atlantic islands, despite repeated warnings by Royal Navy captain Nicholas Barker and others. Barker believed that the intention expressed in Defence Secretary John Nott's 1981 review to withdraw the Royal Navy ship HMS Endurance, Britain's only naval presence in the South Atlantic, sent a signal to the Argentines that Britain was unwilling, and would soon be unable, to defend its territories and subjects in the Falklands"
Britain cuts back on Royal Navy presence and someone decides to take us on
PS. It WAS a war. |

I can't say I'd lose any sleep if Argentina decided to retake the Falklands, but I doubt they will try to do it by force. You have to remember that Argentina was ruled by a military junta who needed a 'victory' to stem mutterings of rebellion at the time. |
