I'm looking for summat that is dofferent to the usual as my (Mr) back is killing me again. I've had massages, acupuncture, naproxen, slept on the floor, had weeks off work and lots more but still I get pain in my middle back. Almost in a line across the bottom of me shoulder blades, I'm just hoping someone has something that's worked for them that I can try, and I'll listen to almost anything to be honest
Thanks |

Keep moving the back as if nothing was wrong....do not sleep on hard surfaces just keep it moving through the pain unless you have serious spinal injuries of course. |

sounds like my life - 1000mg naproxen a day - omeprazole to counteract that - 240 mg of codeine - with dulcolax to counteract that ggrrr - i visited a chiropractor but it was expensive and out of all the things he tried the acupuncture was fairly good - physio did shit all - i can have an op but cannot guarantee to be pain free after that so i just keep popping the pills - and curling up ina tight ball when i can - i feel your pain |

The naproxen only seem to work if I have them sporadically, say twice a week, if I'm on them all the time it seems to work fair less, could be psychological I know |

Get an inversion table - look up teeter-totter on YouTube. Only traction worked for me but with this I can fix myself, though my problem was lumbar compression. Also swimming - when swimming a lot I don't need to use it at all. |

Thanks I'll try that, yes swimming has been mentioned to me by doctor but I've always hated swimming |

I suffe_ed with mid back pain , quite severely , if you can afford it I would recommend a visit to an osteopath rather than a gp , if he/she is good they will pinpoint the problem and give you sound advice on how to nurse it in the future , it worked for me and worth every penny |

Osteopathy ... but try and find one that's someone you know can recommend. I've used them and they're great but I've heard some tales of woe from other people. Medication and exercise (inc yoga) is good advice. |

Keep moving....you could get liquid morphine from the doc but it's very addictive and you could also improve your core muscles to help support your back and improve your posture. That's what i was told anyway. |

I've suffe_ed with back pain ranging from sore muscles to a ruptu_ed disc leading to damaged siatic nerve .... I sympathise.
What worked for me was a good osteopath (and actually doing the exercises he set), strengthening my core including the hated swimming and - a biggie for me - keeping my weight down.
I found if I went over a certain weight it started aching and when I tipped back under the weight it went away....... Good dieting tactic .
The GP and "back clinic" at the hospital were useless and a waste of time.

Agree with the advice to an osteopath. I saw one years ago for a bad back, he was very through in assessing what the cause was and sent me off with exercises and advice to start yoga. Took his advice and what a difference! When I do yoga my back is fine. Whenever I let it slide I notice the discomfort sets in quickly. |

Some food for thought and the diet one is perhaps one I need to get me motivated as being saying toes time I feel over weight, and part the reason I don't wanna go swimming
Back pain really is a blight on so many lives, I hope you all can get some relief from it too xx |

Have you tried physio ? Tennis balls are good for self massage. Look on the tube of you. Some excellent videos on there for helpful exercises .
Good luck

I'd 2nd the weight, I took up running because of back pain, to get moving and to lose the belly that was pulling me forward and putting pressure on my back.
The belly is gone, I'm fitter than I've ever been, I look great, I feel great which brings more confidence and more attention in turn, oh and the pain is gone! |

I like many of you suffer from a bad back and need to get down to an osteopath. Luckily I have one near me the is highly recommended. One of the guys I work with used a chiropractor, it ended up costing him £700.
Remember that chiropractors are not medically recognised. There have been cases of serious neck injuries being caused by their techniques.
Osteopathy websites say on average 6 visits at approx £45 -£50 should cure most problems.
Hydration is also important for the back, keeping the discs healthy...
Further more one of the other guys at work ( bad ankle) was told not to have Cortisone injections by a specialist.
Unfortunately I can't remember what he had instead. The specialist told him, the reason Cortisone is recommended so much is that it is cheap. The good stuff is £150 compa_ed to £2...
He went on to say Cortisone causes problems in the long term and would prevent the expensive treatment from working...
I am sure that some people will disagree with what I have said.
I am no expert but would like people to be able to ask the right/more questions when going for treatment...

Mine goes once or twice a year. Others might dispute the 'science' of the practice of it, but my chiropractor combines massage of the muscles and then manipulation of my vertabrae. Works every time! |

Go swimming. Uses muscles to help strengthen the back.
Abdominal exercise helps take the weight from back muscles.
Don't rest.. keep moving, go for walks etc.
Lay on the floor with something under your lower back to 'create an arc' when pain is really intense.
Ibuprofen gel is good for pain relief.
Had back problems since early teens. Like anything.. no one thing works for everyone.. These are just what works for me. Hope it helps. |

It's worth looking for a school of Osteopathy or Chiropractors as they often do treatment without referalls, saving time. They often offer _educed treatment costs if you allow a student to treat you under supervision... |

Pain killers can cause rebound pain.
You have my complete sympathy as well as admiration for managing to live through and suffer this. My back has been in agony since Saturday - a temporary problem - and I've completely had enough. |

I had a car accident years ago that involved the car rolling and I saw a fantastic osteopath who sorted what nobody else could in just one session.
Worth a try - good luck!
My ex had previously broken his back and had spinal fusion and crumbling vertebrae and he swore that exercise helped him as the muscles supported the spine, although his consultant thought him crazy for some of the stuff he did. He was remarkably active all conside_ed |

I've had slipped/ruptu_ed disc 3 times in the past 20 years. Each time it has happened also had problems with sciatic nerve and sciatica shooting pains down the legs, inc_edibly painful. What has worked for me each time is initially complete rest until the sciatica has gone then slowly getting back onto a regular exercise routine. I do an active job in which I use my back a lot so that keeps it moving. On top of this I also do a 1 hour body core training class at the local leisure centre once a week combined with weight training at home and going for an hour run/jog at least once a week. I'm also thinking of starting a yoga class now as increased likelihood this would prevent it happening again in future. |

Did you get a DIAGNOSIS from the physical therapist? If you did could you share it? If you didn't, then go see a orthopedic specialist and get a clinical diagnosis from them. If they can't tell you exactly what's wrong then get an MRI. You do need to find out what's causing the pain. If it's just muscular then you need to start anti inflammatory medication combined with serious... Fucking serious stretching by you. Yoga, stretching at home, whatever.
But the number 1 thing is don't look for advice from a bunch of strangers online! |

Know where your coming from. I slipped a disc a few years ago. Got a load of physio excersises last year but they just seemed aggrivate it more. I get up from my desk a couple of times an hour so I can move around and stretch. I've heard Chinese medicine has something good for bad backs but not looked into it myself. I'm just going to keep going back to the Dr until they agree to operate on it. |

Definitely, if it's been more than 6 weeks, consider an MRI to eliminate bulges and herniated disks, also avoid sitting, variable height standup sit-down desks are a legal requirement in Denmark as disk pressure is _educed by over 30% along with back aches. Industrial work station design favours standing for the Same reason - much _educed incidences of back problems. |

Few years back I tried white water canoeing. The instructor told me he suffe_ed all his adult life with a bad back until he took up canoeing, when it stopped due to the exercise.
Mind you, split my head open and wrenched an arm that day, so not 100% good for you |

What do you do for a living. Do you spend a lot of time sat in front of a pc. If you do it could all be posture linked. E was suffering back pain and went and saw an osteopath who said it was linked to her posture( she runs her own business and has 2 employees). She got an ergonomics expert to come to the office who basically told her, their chairs were too low monitors at wrong height and all positioned wrong. A few quid spent on lifts and stands for monitors and laptops, and new taller gas struts for chairs and slight repositioning of monitors, and 2 more osteopath sessions and problem solved no more pain |

Find a really good osteopath who will find the root mechanical cause, after years and loads of professionals my osteopath found I was out of line in my Levi's caused by one femur being longer slightly and I compensate and put stress on lower back. Massage, mechanical release and a wedge in my shoe loads better.
Also take Glucosamine 3gm daily and something called SAMe these were recommended by an orthopaedic surgeon and by the British Arthritis association |

And buy Sarah Key's Back Sufferer's Bible. Really useful book."
Yes on both counts ,great book I've used it for years and given friends copies. And Chiropractors work -just remember to continue to do the right things after it stops hurting |

I had the same thing. Along with neck pain, earache, blocked ears, sore shoulder and more. Went to my GP and he said it was stress / anxiety. I didnt realise I was either. Now I take 150 mg of Sertraline each morning. Right as rain now. |
