Howard Marks was best known for his notoriety and mystery as much as actual drug deals etc. I personally think it's ridiculous to compare his death to another drug dealer or involve animals / others on this thread. Ultimately he caught the attention of the public and he allegedly did all sorts of work for the governments of several countries which was positive, so he'll always be divisive but as he's well known, comes with the territory. Truth is we'll never know, but he lived a full life for sure. RIP and if people are hung up about drug dealers or horses, what are they doing about it?

I thought he was very convivial the two times I met him.

I've met a lot of drug dealers in various professional and unprofessional capacities and, as they go, I thought he had a lot of interesting things to say about the state of legalisation, the damage the drugs laws inadvertently cause and their failure in general to stem the problems that drug misuse can bring.

.

The facts are heroin is used in medicine and hospitals, it's a product and products are what the world does well.

We make heroin for pharmaceutical use extremely cheaply. Like £5 a kilo, but used outside of medicine and pharmacy it's £50,000 a kilo.

What were actually doing is putting £49,995 pounds in the hands of bad people, who then use this money to do more bad things! And all because we moralise over it's use!.

The cost of giving away heroin to addicts would be less than the cost of methadone and technically the first one is less harmful than the latter.

But fear not tens of thousands of people can continue to suffer for your moral conscience to be clean, that we didn't let them do it!.

Hoorah, let's slap ourselves on the back

Quite the interesting argument. Governments struggle so much to actually _educe and combat it, criminals thrive at times. And for all the people that moan about drugs etc, there's not enough to either inspire change or action their words, drives me mad.

Yes.

He engaged in a morally questionable business, got sent to maximum security prison in America and then made a career out of telling stories and lecturing about it.

He was a very clever man.

He certainly didn't kill anyone, nor did his actions lead to anyone's death that I'm aware of.

I'd imagine it would be, though he lived up north.

I loved him when younger. Feel a fair bit more conflicted about his past and some of his exploits now, but whatever the morality of it, he was an interesting guy.

I saw him once and someone asked "when were you most nervous". His answer was "probably when I was smuggling (insert ludicrous amount here) kilos of dope into Thailand".

I'm not too sure about the figure, but it was a crazy amount. 32,000kg or something.

I do like the fact he taught Welsh to death row prisoners in the USA

it wasn't official, just some of the local boys paying their respects to another local boy. i heard there's another unofficial gathering in pontycymmer later this week by some his schoolmates and other friends. i'm hoping Gruff will let us know when the main event is.

How about swapping "morally questionable" with "totally illegal" or "criminal activities". That puts his activities into their proper context. He smuggled drugs for years, there is nothing remarkable about that.
