Have you ever noticed that there's less traffic when traffic lights break down?.

Apparently, this idea is being championed in parliament, proposal include removing some lights completely and switching some off during certain hours.

.

I think this may have some merit in certain areas, I was sat at lights the other night on red with no traffic to be seen anywhere... I was almost tempted

There are these ones in Southampton that are green for such a short time , two cars barely make it pass. Adds 30 minutes to my journey on a Tuesday morning

I remember once when I was 18, me and my friends were in Brooklyn at 3am. One of my friends was driving a few of us home from a party. It was empty on the roads. We were driving down 4th avenue from 9th street to 80th street. Every block has lights and they are synchronized. We would get about 5 blocks before hitting the next light. It was a seriously frustrating experience, but we didn't run any of them

I guess it depends which lights - some I can think of are at accident black spots, so we're put in for that reason. Others - on roundabouts are already often turned off at less busy times.

Lights seem to often be used as a traffic calming mechanism as much as anything else.

Would dearly love to be able to turn left on a red if possible. Just as the North Americans do on a right

Where I live,if lights break down there's still traffic and people beeping their horns at junctions, because of others trying to creep out to stop traffic.

I think they were intending to introduce give way procedures
