"Scientists have found that people who constantly get bothered by grammatical errors online have "less agreeable" personalities than those who just let them slide.
And those friends who are super-sensitive to typos on your Facebook page? Psychological testing reveals they're generally less open, and are also more likely to be judging you for your mistakes than everyone else. In other words, they're exactly who you thought they were. That sounds pretty obvious, but this is actually the first time researchers have been able to show that a person's personality traits can actually determine how they respond to typos and grammatical errors, and it could teach us a lot about how people communicate (or miscommunicate) online."

Bad grammar sometimes really hurts. Like a flickering light that you can sometimes ignore but can sometimes give you a headache in seconds.
Thing is, we're using phones more now, so are all at the mercy of autocorrect. But we all have built-in spell checks. So as we get better at some things, we'll get worse at others! |

I can let it slide,mostly because it's only recently that the government has decided to teach all children grammar,from primary age. Previously,it was only taught at secondary level,and that would only be to the top sets,which would be,I think, ? of the school year. I was just talking about grammar with my sister when an article by a children's author (possibly Rosen,but don't quote me) saying what I said above. I had been looking at my 8 yr old grandson's homework thinking I don't remember doing that at his age. And I was right,we didn't. |

Urgh the daily fail 
it does annoy me if I can barely read what someone has written but otherwise won't matter much to me. It's the ones that use numbers instead of letters or try to abbreviate everything until it's virtually unreadable that do my head in! |

I'm lazy. I'm not a half-wit. I don't think English is a beautiful language; it's a hodge-podge of numerous languages with influences thrown in. Someone who hasn't been taught grammar will never know they should know it. There's an awful lot of the English language and grammar I,and possibly you,don't have a clue about. Let us not judge,lest we be judged. |

I let it go, because there can be many reasons behind it. It just can feel like a type of bullying to me - people take the pee out of others about it. It's not the end of the world. There's far more important things to get hung up about.

There's a difference between using reasonable grammar, which doesn't require a university degree to master just basic literacy; and the use of text speak. People clearly make the effort to write in retarded text speak presumably because they sound 'youthful' and trendy'. Each to their own but why not make the same effort to write decent English ? If being particlar about this makes me a 'grammar nazi' I couldn't care less. I'd rather meet another GN any day of the week. |

And if someone is dyslexic , has a learning difficulty, missed school for a variety of reasons. Perhaps had a brain injury that affected their spelling etc - they're less worthy in some way? |

I've unfriended a couple of people from Facebook for this.
Whilst I always strive to use good grammar, autocorrect can have it's moments, this isn't a formal letter, it's an informal medium.
If someone corrects my pronunciation in conversation, for something that trivial I would assume they are a bit of a jerk. Same rules apply here.
It's not an attractive quality, nit picking the minutea of another's conversation. Unless you are actually an English teacher in a classroom full of 8 year olds, it's best not to go around talking to everyone as if you are.

Publicly mocking people for their spelling and grammar isn't on, I agree about that. But in a place where you're reliant on written communication, I do expect people to make a bit of an effort if it doesn't come easily to them.

Publicly mocking people for their spelling and grammar isn't on, I agree about that. But in a place where you're reliant on written communication, I do expect people to make a bit of an effort if it doesn't come easily to them.

It's not that big a deal for me on informal platforms such as this, though we do avoid people who haven't made the effort with their profile. The odd typo, autocarrot or missed apostrophe is not a deal breaker.
But there are some posts which are barely decipherable, or do not make sense, or where the poster has written the exact opposite of what they in all likliehood mean.
On several occasions I've been on panels assessing job applications. The ones littered with poor spelling and grammar go straight in the bin.
So does a poor command of written English hold you back in life? You bet it does.

He'd be horrified to see his name linked to an endorsement of how they're teaching it now!
It was taught before, just not prescribed in the way the new curriculum dictates. The one thing the new curriculum will undoubtedly achieve is a new generation of grammar pedants. |

As a Secretary of over 20 years I've noticed that literacy standards in the workplace have dropped quite dramatically, not only of grammar but also punctuation and a basic writing and language skills.
The majority of my better paid colleagues can't even string a sentence together, and seeing official procedural documents or letters to patients with errors and poor presentation really saddens me. It's not that they are dyslexic (and I appreciate some people are and it is very difficult for those people, however in my experience they are a minority), they just don't seem to care or are just plain lazy.
I'm very much old school and loved English lessons and creative writing as a child and was great at spelling but will admit that spellcheckers have made me lazy and I'm not as sharp as I once was. I fear that as time progresses, the skills I hold dear will be lost on future generations |

I liked the part about a mistake being like a stone in your shoe - an irritant.
I also liked that the Guardian didn't suggest them to be "jerks", but just more introverted and differently "aroused" (and a helpful description of what that means).

I can't understand how people can let it slide. To me, it just completely undermines whatever the person is saying.

I may not be the best person to comment, as I was paid to be a grammar nazi for years 
People shouldn't mock others and I don't think quibbling over the odd mistake is right. However, grammar issues only really get mentioned when people are asking for advice on their profiles.
If the profile is badly written to the point where it makes reading it difficult or annoying, I think it's ok to mention it in those circumstances. It should be done sensitively and constructively though, acknowledging there may be good reasons for it. |

As someone who is dyslexic, I do think it is sometimes used as an excuse.
I know there are different levels, and other genuine reasons for poor English skills.
Personally, I do my best when writing a post. Personal pride and all that.
In this day and age if the spell checker on my phone can't help, I just Google the word I can't spell.
I do hate the your, you're and there, the're and their mistakes.
Apart from that, as long as there are capitals in the right places and the odd comma, it's not too bad....
