I want to make my own hanging baskets this year rather than buying ready made. I am a total novice when it comes to gardening. Can anyone recommend some trailing plants etc for baskets and also something for my borders. Id like a carpet of colour for those. Sorry this thread is hardly hard core sex and rock n roll.

You can buy trailing varieties of most plants, verbena, lobelia, geraniums, ivy for greenery.

Try going to a nursery rather than a garden centre, ask their advice re ground covering plants dependant on your soil type

I think both your hanging baskets already look fantastic with the nice tassles. As for your borders just keep them well trimmed and I will advise on some " bedding" plants if you wish !!

Trailing petunias, fuschias, lobelia, million bells, ivy, bacopa snowflake all fantastic for baskets, borders, regular petunias, busy lizzies, alyssum, marigolds if you don't have many snails, same with hostas, mimulus is very beautiful and bright, cornflowers and lilies, the list is endless, I have just moved to a flat with a courtyard so this year all mine plants will be in tubs and pots

Remember to put in water-retaining crystals and slow release fert into the compost and put a v small pot with holes in bottom among plants to help with watering

Petunias, Busy lizzies, trailing lobelia, and begonias would look breathtaking in baskets! Good luck and lets see some pix when thewy are at their best!!

Thank you all, i have faithfully written down all the flowers you have mentioned (yes im that bad at gardening) and will have a go at doing them.
