Sent my youngest daughter to the park today with her friend. First time I've let her go to the park on her own. But I thought it would be ok because my flat over looks the park so I could watch them. I noticed her playing with two other children n these children were with an older lady who I asume was there mother so all's good or so I thought. I noticed that my daughter n her friend kept disapering into a bush so I decided to get my shoes on n go n see what was going on. Whilst Walk in to the park I saw the woman n two kids leg it. They had snatched my daughter's phone off her! Furious was not the word I legged it after them but they were long gone. So me n my daughter came back to the flat I phoned my ex n the police. A few hours later my ex phones to inform me he had had a phone call off a male demanding £15 for the return of the phone. I will not publish my thought on these individuals. I will only say that I feel Sorry for the children who are being used and taught to be thieves. |

She's fine she's happy to have her phone back. I feel guilty for letting her go to the park but she's in high school now so I've got to let her have some independence |

The phone will be using GPS and I know movements can be traced but I`m not sure if they can tell the current position of a phone. I hope they can if only to catch these people! |

I know is easier said than done but try not to feel guilty, it can't change anything & she will benefit in the long run from having some independence. |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
That is so sad, on so many levels, for all the children involved. It is also so pointless and anger-inducing.
I hope yours learn to see this as a one off bad thing and you will all be confident enough to try independence again.
I hope you feel less angry soon - son't let them steal your mood as well as the phone.
One of ours was mugged last week but he just handed over his phone and the money he had and is unhurt. |

I doubt they'll bother with that - but mention of 'I'm going to meet him and may have a baseball bat in the car' might spur them to tag along and pick him up before an exchange. |

Sadly that's the best thing to do in this day in age although it lets them get away with it. I've informed the police to close the case cos I love alone n don't want to be involved. I can only assume the money is for illegal substances. |

Well if you let people get away with it you're allowing them to get away with it again.
(Disclaimer: Don't actually take a baseball bat out in the car... unless you play baseball..)

You daughter needs to keep her phone with her or not take it out ... especially if you can see her from the window. I went mad when my daughter list hers, but blocked it straight away. Different story when my son was mugged and beaten and got his stolen because he wasn't careless, but still blocked .... just got my daughter a new rose gold thing, but its ensured. More likely she will damage it by dropping it .... |

"Find my iphone" that they can use to trace phones and if needs be prosecute thieves so I've told both my daughter's to download this now. |

Don't feel guilty, they have to learn ... sometimes the hard way. I have three teens and my youngest is a girl. You can't follow them everywhere ... hard as it is. Maybe I'm being a bit thick here but what's the difference between prosecuting them after tracing the phone with an app in the future and prosecuting them for the blackmail this time round? |

Don't feel guilty. It's not your fault. That post was OTT and uncalled for.
She is old enough to be allowed out to play on her own.
This is a lesson for her to be more careful though.
I think you were wrong to pay the thief but you were certainly not wrong to allow your daughter out to play. |

Make sure you wrap her up in cotton wool too.
A little unrealistic to expect High School aged children to never go anywhere on their own. |

Don't feel guilty OP. You are right, they need their independence, and to learn life's lessons, even when it breaks your heart as a parent.
One thought though, consider buying them a cheap £5 phone for them to use when they go out on their own. You wouldn't let them carry £300 in cash on them at that age, and an Iphone is surely a similar value?
Glad they're safe though.

Thank you. Yes I do agree with you about paying the thief but at the time it seamed the best thing to do. My ex and I both just want quiet lives and we split up to give our children the best possible lives cos togther the situation was very bad. We both care a lot for each other and for our children. So paying the thief in this case we are Hoping is the best outcome. |

That's just nasty.
My kids are younger and we let them off on their own and out of sight all the time - mainly because they have phones!
The apps are really good - well worth a few moments to set up. |

Me personally i would have informed the police that i'd arranged to meet these people to collect the phone for £15 and then let the police nail the scumbags. You can't let scum like this get away with such things, they will just move onto another victim now thinking they can keep getting away with it. |

Tbh I don't think we have been the first. I'm hoping that even tho we haven't carried it onwards that the people are known to the poilce and that maybe the park will be patroled. Tbf to rhyl police they do have plenty of bobbies on the beat all be it plastic ones |

Very emotive not to mention disconcerting. Personally I would agree to pay and at that point try to effect a citizen's arrest, assuming it was reasonably safe to do so. After all, asking for payment in exchange for stolen goods is a criminal offence. As regards bringing a long a little 'friend' in the shape of a baseball bat I would suggest also bringing along a catcher's mitt and glove, it reduces the risk of prosecution, because after all you were on your way to a park to practise weren't you?
At the end of the day though, safety first, as long as no loved ones were harmed you can always replace the phone. |

Why not use the built in 'find my phone' app on an iPhone to i/d the location (mine was good enough to if the shop where I lost mine last year), and give the street location and a description of the their to the police? |

"That is so sad, on so many levels, for all the children involved.
Sadly that's the best thing to do in this day in age although it lets them get away with it. I've informed the police to close the case cos I love alone n don't want to be involved. I can only assume the money is for illegal substances."

"Sent my youngest daughter to the park today with her friend. "

"Sorry if I've Misread this... But op are you saying you paid up for the phone back... ?
If so never never do so as next time it would be more... Or maybe they could hurt someone next time. Always report things like this and make it clear you will not be bullied.
"
It was my exhusband who chose to pay for the phone to be given back. Tbh I think I would of done the same too. |

"Can't help thinking the fact you paid means there will be more victims
Horrible experience for the youngster
"
I agree and I don't think H was the first. I'm keeping an eye on the park and I certainly think that I may phone the police anomaly if I see them again. |

"It's been done. Personally seen it done with car keys, return for £20 or they get chucked."
Exactly. Not sure what else we could of done. As another fab formite from rhyl who lives near me Will no doubt confirm the area I live in is sadly quite rough. There was even a murder in January in the flat next door to me so paying to get my daughter's phone back was in my thoughts the correct thing to do. Criminals will always come unstuck in one way or another at some point especialy small fry that these seam to be. Xx |

"I'd be more worried about my child thinking going into bushes with strangers is a safe choice than a phone being stolen. "
The Bush in question is very small more of a shrub and I was watchin from my window. As soon as I saw her going into the bush I put my slip on shoes and was with her in minutes. Hence how I saw them run off. |

"Perhaps if you'd gone to the park with your daughter instead of sitting in your flat watching from the window, assuming the woman your daughter was with was ok, this may not have happened ..... just a thought
Her daughter is high school age so 11/12 at the youngest. Would you have gone to the park with your mum at that age? I don't think so!!"
Yes she is 12. I was playing in the local graveyard at her age lol x |

"Good job it was only a phone, some scum use kids to snatch other kids. Like you said you saw them playing and thought it is ok. "
Yes and now of course I'm left with the dilemma of do a go with them to the park or still let them go alone. |
