From tomorrow it will be compulsory for all dogs to be micro chipped and with over 9million dogs nationwide, what do you think of it and is it a good idea?

we've always done it, legislation is all well and good but if the resources are not there to enforce it then its not as effective..

Both my dogs and my cat are chipped. I think it's a great idea - not sure how it'll be enforced though.

"I think cats should be too ... love to see someone trying to catch our cats to do this '.. oh hold on, that would be me ..."

good idea though. especially as cats get run over and nobody has to report that. at least owners would know if something happened to their pet.

OP. i heard the storing of passwords and that isn't that great. passwords or codes or whatever is used to identify the pet that is chipped.

I am feeling we may not be responsible owners now .... teens microchipped would be good as I am always worried about where they are and if they are okay

it's strange they made it law to be chipped though. you used to have to register to be a dog owner and now you don't, i suppose we're going back to those days for some reason.

By *innamon!Woman  over a year ago

no matter

Put the kids on friend finder you can see where they are as long as they dont deactivate it.

Microchip wont hep you find where animals are its just a number held on a register if you move and dont change the information it will only connect to the last known address. Make sure you give as much info as you can and keep it up to date.

Microchips help if the animal is found and taken to a vet or the animal is dead and scanned. Vets can call the chip centre and retrieve the owners info to call them.

As with most laws of this type, the responsible, law abiding dog owners who aren't the problem anyway will adhere to it and the people who are the problem won't.

Cats should be chipped too, in my _iew. There's nothing to it, you can get it done at the same time as they're neutered or vaccinated. Seems the bare minimum you should do as a pet owner.

One of my cats was killed by a car recently, I'm glad she was chipped.

I'm a little concerned.....considering the definition of a 'dog'....some couples could get in a right pickle.

dog

d?g/

noun

1.

a domesticated carnivorous mammal that typically has a long snout, an acute sense of smell, non-retractile claws, and a barking, howling, or whining voice.

Both mine have been done for years.

It will be handy in identifying owners if a dog attacks someone,or if they catch a dog worrying sheep.

not sure tbh. it will have to be done by vets anyway so won't cost the government anything.

i'll have a google about it.

not found anything much, just that it encourages responsible dog ownership somehow.

and some charities are chipping pets for free.

Already got ourselves microchipped when we picked her up from the rescue centre, personally I think it is a good thing they have to be chipped. It might make people think twice before dumping them.

I always got my dogs chipped.

It's not just for dog control; there is a lot of dog theft :

Your dog( if found) can be identified

I think it's a good idea. The breeder arranged the microchipping and first vaccinations before I picked her up. My vet always checks her microchip every time she goes, and the pet log number is on her vetinerary records, as they do with all dogs I suppose.

My kitty is chipped even though she's an indoor cat. I took her on holiday with me so I figured it was the sensible thing to do.

I think it's good that it's being made compulsory. It might make irresponsible dog owners more responsible and discourage theft. That's got to be a good thing.

i trained mine to poop in the garden at home, was easy enough to do.

i do think people need to be given lessons on how to look after pets before getting them though. my mum always made us read up about looking after pets before getting us something new like rats or mice.

Some simple minded people just get dogs because their mates dog has had pups, or someone down the pub knows of pups available, irresponsible owners thinking they can breed the dogs to make a few quid. They are never going to willingly get the dog vaccinated or chipped.

It will be when the dogs do have to go to the vets, that the vet will check and microchip it. If they are on benefits then I don't expect there will be a charge.

I don't think the microchip is expensive anyway. My pup was chipped before I had her from the breeders so I don't know the exact price.

I have a bit of an issue with micro chips.

Chips are designed to be crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. As soon as they are microwaved the whole things becomes a sorry, soggy mess.

It's a bad enough practice for humans so for feeding pooches these abominations as compulsory is nothing short of cruel. Especially without a flavoursome sauce.

people who breed from home really need checking out. i only know of 3 people who have done this but every single one has no consideration for the animals themselves, and in one case neither did they care that people were buying 'faulty' pets (ridge backs prone to tumours).

charities are doing chipping for free so it can cost people nothing. they probably have to be on benefits although i didn't see this mentioned.

When I got my dog from the rescue shelter part of the fee was to have him chipped. He was taken there in the first place as he was found loose and hadn't been chopped. Someone lost a great dog for the sake of the chip, their loss was my great gain.
