My Orange contract is up, and having stolen £22 off me for one phone call when I ran out of minutes I vowed to change to Giff-Gaff.
So, the 'mates' sim finally arrives this week, I get my PAC code and let them know, the big day arrives and..........no service on my phone because the handset is locked and no-one told me!!
So, I ask Orange for an unlocking code - but that's going to take 10 days and meanwhile I have no service on my phone!!
Only thing to do meanwhile they say is get a PAC code from Giff-Gaff, cancel that account, and move the number back to EE/Orange.
OK so I do that, I go back to EE - only now they say my account has been closed and they are no longer opening new Orange accounts, and if I open an EE account it won't fucking work on that either!!
AAAAAAARGH!!!!

You should be able to get your phone unlocked fairly cheaply at those phone stands in shopping centres.
Or you can buy software to do it yourself. It's not expensive.
I did one of mine with unlocking software when I switched an Orange phone to giffgaff. |

Technically, while I think DV's advice is probably more sound, I think the FBI can do it now too. And I think they do it for free. All it takes is for you pretend to be an axe-murderer or summat.

I am on a computer on wifi on here - I have my whatsapp still on, though god knows how 'cos I have no data access and my number is locked, but people can ring me on whatsapp!
I can make emergency calls, so if the philistines come over the battlements I can call for reinforcements.
That just leaves my clients!! BUT, if I put my new giff gaff sim in my old unlocked steam phone, I could at least pick up my texts and messages once or twice a day.......in theory! |

EE sims should probably work in orange and T-Mobile handsets - don't quote me though.
But I'd shop around for the best deal for you now. BT have been taking over EE for some time but offering better tariffs. Id check with BT mobile if an orange locked handset would work with a BT sim. |

They can't, though they warned of risk of damage - cheapest I've found so far is 20 and I've already paid 8.99 to orange. It might be less than 10 days but that's what they allow just to get a bloody code generated!!!It's outrageous!

Well I do not understand this - got the new giff gaff sim with my old number officially migrated to it on my old steam driven phone, and I can make and recieve calls and texts. Now, if only I can find the right charger........
But, the totally amazing thing is using my old sim in my smartphone, which is now attached to a closed account with no number, I have whatsapp service and internet access on wifi.
Why, when the whatsapp will not work without my live phone being present normally??
Answers on a postcard please, prizes to be awarded.......

I've just had a couple of months without a phone and was quite enjoying the freedom
Ma doctor on the other hand didn't agree, and wouldn't give me a repeat prescription as I was contactless, so I had to relent and jump back in the rat race  |
