I refer to the likes of videogames, anime, graphic novels etc...
As someone who's into his geeky stuff (not terribly though, I don't cosplay or attend conventions or anything), I often come across complaints that women are often portrayed as basically being a load of barely dressed tits and ass with little if any actual character, purely there for the (supposedly male) reader to ogle, or a prize for the male hero to win.
Agree or disagree? |

(checks the PC brigade are not about).
Its fiction and i am adult enough to separate that and real life. Some others may not be able to and will complain it objectifies women.

Sorry, the PC Brigade alert went off on my computer. I must be the one on duty tonight.
I find the anime "women" to look like girls with pneumatic, difficult to achieve bodies. My objection is that as in lots of fiction beforehand things haven't moved on much from the damsel in distress waiting to be rescued.

You know, it's possible to have a conversation about how groups of people are represented in culture without sounding off the 'PC gone mad' alarm.
Stereotypes are boring and reductive, if nothing else.

As a comic book fan myself, I actually like the pneumatic female characters. I like the kick arse ones though. Damsels waiting for a knight do fuck all for me.
Comics and a lot of fiction writing are about fantasy worlds. As long as guys can separate fantasy from reality, I don't see the problem. If objectifying female characters leads them to objectify women, they need to actually get a life.
Vampirella is one of my favourite characters. She wears almost nothing. I think her outfit is great.
Most of the fiction I read has very strong female characters in. Very few sit around waiting to be saved, and in fact, sometimes the guys need saving from them. |

He seems to read too much anti-feminist stuff written by shock jock "journalists" looking for fame via notoriety, and angry men who can't get laid and doesn't have enough real life experience to separate the truth from the made up.

I think she has some good points, she's probably not 100% correct about everything but who is?
The point is - it's criticism. Books, films, music, poetry - they all get criticised and for the most part people dont lose their minds over it even if they disagree. Video game fans need to grow up a bit if they can't take some very basic critiques of the stereotypes in their games.

This is the privilege you claimed didn't exist when it suited you the other day? Or was actually not privilege at all because it meant you are more likely to be killed or commit suicide? That privilege.

Looks like we're on similar pages.
I'm far from a feminist, and personally love alluringly (un)dressed women, BUT not at the expense of character. Over-sexualisation is a creepy and tacky gimmick, but if adding that layer of to a female character might ADD to them - like as you mentioned, Vampiress/Temptress/Femme Fatale characters, who it makes sense would use their beauty to their advantage, then yes, I think sexually provocative female characters are a good thing.
I often say, men have physical strength, women have physical beauty - and the women may just have the advantage there, after all, no man could defeat Samson, but Delilah did. |

I'm really not interested in debating the merits of Anita Sarkeesian's videos. But she's released the tweets she gets and they are full of sexism and harassment. It doesn't matter if she is wrong about every single thing - no one deserves that. |

He frequently ignores facts. If you had your eyes open and looked for both sides of the debate, you'd see that.
I'm not debating feminism and idiots like Milo with you. That's not the topic of this thread for one, and you don't have the knowledge or life experience to make it worthwhile. I'm not sure why you're so angry but I hope you get past it and that you eventually realise exactly what people like Milo are.

Sturgeon's law.
90% of sci-fi is shit.
Can't speak about games as I last played a video game about 20 years ago (tomb raider 2)
Graphic novels. Tank girl has character and very little clothing.
The rest of my reading tends to be Alan Moore or Neil Gaiman. If the clothing is skimpy, it's normally essential to the story, or in character.
If I want to ogle. I'll look at porn, not pseudo-porn.
That goes for '50 shades of grey', too. |
