We had a healthy discussion about what 'feminine' means to us over dinner at the Indian last night. My point was, I don't know a lot of women who are what is deemed by society as 'feminine' ... but turns out we found it hard to put our finger on exactly what 'feminine' means ... can anyone shed some light? What does it mean to you? Is that different from the mainstream definition? |

I suppose I think of it as traits that are commonly associated with women. Caring, nurture, gentleness, sensitivity.
But that's problematic, because on the whole they're not traits which apply to me, but I don't feel any less feminine as a result.
Interesting one to think about, I can't quite put my finger on what I mean by it either. |

I do know women who I think are traditionally feminine, but on the whole I don't tend to get on well with them. All that silly girly fairy hearts and flowers, romance and talking in little high pitched girly voices stuff absolutely does my head in. As do women who define their entire identity around their feminine roles, i.e. their entire existence is about being such and such's wife or so and so's mother. |

I know what the word feminine means to me. Its a lot to do with the demeonor i have traits about me that are definetly feminine. I have very feminine friends and some not makes no odds.
Do i do it to please a man, not sure how anything that comes natural is to please anyone.
But i have more girly characteristics which i dont think is the same as feminine |

So who exactly do you consider this "society" to be?
Women are a part of society (surprise!), and we are who we are...
Just go and stand on a High Street in any town, and watch the people go by - what do women look like? Certainly not the contrived "feminine" of the media...
"Feminine" is us - it's who we are - and thankfully we've found more freedom to be ourselves over recent decades.
Oh, and I don't feel the "Feminism" is valid any longer - it turned out to be as big a constriction as the things that it tried to erase...
All in all - a very interesting question by the OP - and interesting to see how people reply!

one of my close friends is just like this except the high pitched voice i dont know anyone that goes round talking in a high pitched voice it would great on me |

I don't class myself as feminine. I do possess the nurturing, caring personality but I'm not into flowers and hearts. I'm much more comfortable getting my hands dirty playing with my power tools than doing my nails and make up. |

I'm not feminine in the traditional sense at all . Being goth , it's all about the black and dark side .
But , when I'm dressed up and out looking for fun , I feel feminine insomuch as I feel attractive , I show stocking tops , wearing revealing clothes ( albeit black ) and my make up is certainly worn to enhance my femininity .

I don't feel feminine.
Then again feminine, to me, seems like you're submissive to men. With a tiny, lithe body. Pretty, and spends a lot of time and effort on appearance to benefit men. Wants to be married to a man with kids.
I grew up in a time and place where women went from being nothing much, apart from entertainment for men, to having the same rights as men.
I do prefer how society is heading and that gender doesn't assign anything to either gender and you can be (should be able to be) what you want without stigma. |

I'm definitely feminine... I always wear skirts/dresses. Always a full face and nice underwear.
However I'm also the breadwinner of the family and I work in hi vis and a hard hat. Go figure. |

Interesting question as both male & female can display feminine traits, as previously mentioned.
I don't view myself as particularly feminine but I know I'm viewed that way by a couple of friends as I'm into hair & make up, dresses & I don't burp or fart in company 
However, I can parallel park & explain the off side rule. |

When glammed up I'm as feminine as I can be. This is actually a lot more involved that what one would imagine. To be feminine on a night out is not simply a case of just getting glammed up. You have to change how you walk, how you stand, how you bend down, how you carry things. It can be very difficult. |

I'm not naturally feminine in the personality traits most people tend to mention as feminine, or in the things I sound my free time enjoying. I'm empathetic but I class that as just being a person who isn't a dick rather than it being due to my gender. I'm bossy and logical, which is down to my individual character and the way my brain and personality developed as a kid. Yet I am still feminine in some undefinable, can't put my finger on it way. It's got nothing to do with how I act, speak or think and everything to do with how I move and look. |

Just go and stand on a High Street in any town, and watch the people go by - what do women look like? Certainly not the contrived "feminine" of the media...
"Feminine" is us - it's who we are - and thankfully we've found more freedom to be ourselves over recent decades.

My daughter had a rude awakening when she went to her father over the summer, a traditional Latin home .... she noted that the men do nothing and the women wait on them hand and foot. Her father complained that everyone had to tidy up after her (she takes after me in that respect); I asked why bother doing anything for her, she doesn't expect it ... and will do it when she is ready. I do wonder if a 'feminine ' has connotations of subservient and passive, and if it does, why? |

it''s exactly that for me, or used to be anyway, that women are there for men.
i think it's because men are workers and so owned by their employers, so they needed men to feel not as less in society so made women even lesser than men are. |

Fe - to mean "Tits"
Min - to mean " Fanny" (min as in minge)
ine - to mean "Arse" (ine, shortened to hind)
So basically Feminine means that you ladies have Tits, Fanny and Arse.. and that's just culture  |

It's a tough one that demands the answer about what the differences between masculine and feminine actually are? I've always self defined as feminine but I'm a mix and my definition has been influenced by our culture. And as Dee, AffectionateB etc have said, our society has changed. We're all more a collection of different individuals now, with less sharply clear boundaries between us.

Very difficult to define but I'd say it's a combination of sensuality, style and vulnerability...Audrey Hepburn as opposed to Katie Price. I met someone like that who works as a Estate gardener the other day. I got her name but forgot to ask her for her phone number ! |
