Not all opinions are facts. Claiming something as fact means you have to be able to back up that assertion with evidence.
People stating their opinion as fact without being able to support it look a bit daft to me.
Facts are not opinions. They're, well, facts. That humans breathe oxygen, for example, is not an opinion. |

Opinions are thoughts never facts. I used to live with people who thought they could end arguments with 'that's my opinion' and their opinion could never be wrong. I used tobsay I didn't care because I don't deal with opinions only facts. |

Everybody has their own truth depending on their own set of personality traits and skewed by their gamut of life experiences. So when someone says 'I know...' that is generally what they mean. |

this. If I've been bitten by 3 dogs, chances are I'm not going to like dogs. My view might be dogs are bitey bastards and very different to someone who sees their pet as a loved family member.
I hear what the OP is saying - someone who is well informed and an expert in a field will have better insight and wider knowledge of an issue so can make a more better informed comment than someone that doesn't.

Of course they're not. But that means that my opinion of which opinions should carry more weight can be different to yours. Somehow I suspect you rate your own more than mine... |

"...are equally valid"
No.
You're entitled to your opinion and you're entitled to be wrong.
Someone may have vast amounts of experience on a matter, compared to someone else's borrowed words from a tabloid newspaper.
Their opinions aren't equal. |

Exactly. I'd place more value on the prognosis of a brain tumour from a medical expert than a random bloke in the pub. |

All opinions are important. They are what steer peoples beliefs and actions.
What is dangerous is when the inculcated/uneducated/brainwashed no longer THINK about what they hear because they must have immovable truth.
As said earlier they should not be held up as facts/truths. We should be able to reason/argue with others as to how we reached those conclusions/opinions.
That's my reasoning. |

No no no no no - Google says dogs aren't bitey so your experience gets belittled and shunned by the ultimate authority of Google. .. |

Im not 100% sure about this analogy. If someone reads a report written by an 'expert' what makes their opinions differ if they both hold the content of the report to be true ? |

The 'expert' wrote it. The reader agrees with it. The expert is the 'leader' 'intelligence' thinker but the reader is his ....... evangelist if you like. His word spreader.
What makes one opinion more 'true' than the other? nowt. |

Because someone reading won't and can't know the background and why that expert came to that conclusion.
It's the brain tumour example: headache = brain tumour because that's what the expert said last time. |

2 + 2 = 4 written by an expert is still 2 = 2 = 4 if it is read and retold.
I am not saying each person has = gravitas. I am saying that if a researcher writes something and proves it with believable evidence and a reader reads it and can 'see' the validity of the evidence then the logic , reasoning, argument and informed opinion are the same. The road differed but the destination the same.
I have to go to work now xx

This is a rather pleasant thread so far.
I wrote a comment in a thread a couple of weeks a ago to rationalise and negate the use of the term "I have a right to an opinion". The conclusion was, yes you do if you can validate it with a responsible and verifiable answer. You do not if you can't and just say I don't like or agree with it or have a ridiculous answer. Hence a healthy debate can form rather than a spat. |

Knowledge, experience and understanding isn't the conclusion/fact/opinion, but how you got there.
I'd rather take advice from someone with more knowledge, experience and understanding. |

"I love the debate, until it gets personal. Sometimes my opinion shifts a little when I hear a perspective that I haven't considered before '..."
As soon as someone becomes personal they are lost. |

It depends on what the opinion that one person has is based on , and whether there is any factual reason as to why another person thinks their opinion is any more valid .
If a difference of opinion occurs when there is an undeniable fact being missed by one party - their opinion will be less valid .
But if the opinion is on a personal matter with no definitive facts available , all opinions are equally valid .

Agreed. As has already been stated.
But the opening post, and the point I'm addressing, stated that all opinions are equal. |
