years ago in the age of the movie star, the embodiment of a curvy woman was the hourglass figure...
think of Marilyn Monroe and Jayne Russell in their prime
Marilyn certainly had curves with her 36-23-35 measurements, and Jayne Russell was a 38-24-36 so no complaints there either...
I am a very odd shape ..not curvy at all apart from my bum and boobs obviously but because I am high waisted my tummy expands a bit more than I would like...I just think its a good job I'm tall 
I know a lot of people say curves are fabulous but they have come a long way since the 50's ....I guess as with most things its all subjective..  |

They used to wear waist cinchers back then. Corselettes, girdles, that kind of thing. I remember as a teenager trying a corselettes on and being amazed at the shape it gave me. Wearing such things every day would change your shape, and it wasn't necessarily healthy.
Saying that, I am waiting for the day I finally reach my target weight so I can splurge on a complete What Katie Did lingerie set and a custom made steel boned corset. |

I describe myself as curvy on here as i seem to fall into the fab definition of curvy wouldnt describe myself as curvy in the real world id describe myself as a bit chubby but thats not an option on here.
If i had to say one person who springs to mind when i think of the word curvy its kelly brook. I used to run a room on an international site for years for large ladies and admirers, ive been on many sites since 2000 and this is the first one ever ive come across this obsession with the word curvy |

I'm an odd shape too.

I don't think that curvy has to be hour glass. Why can't other shapes be curvy? An hour glass figure is already enviable so why can't curvy describe other shapes? Just because most of my curves are lower down does that mean I'm not curvy? Ah Fuck it. I don't care. That's why I've stolen fabulous and that describes my body shape only  |

right your a perfect example of what i would describe as voluptious i think voluptious is a lovely word and conjours up in my mind a larger lady with curves and a softness of folds. If i saw someone calling themselves voluptious woman i wouldnt expect them to be of slight build. Same as i love the word rubinesque thats how i used to describe myself |

I don't think it's that hard to define. I would look at a women's body,if her waist goes in creating a curve, then she's curvy. Likewise if she has a straight torso and curves out at the hips, curvy.

Curviness hourglass what does it matter. I take a lot of pictures of women ,semi pro, and I am always amazed by the labels people put on them self and others. From a purely photographic point of _iew curves are very pleasing and create good shadowing and contrasts. But having worked with all sorts of shapes of ladies its the confidence and personality that shines through the picture and gives it that "sexy" look. Oh and the photographer adds a little bit too |

I dont really care to be honest. I havent seen a woman who isnt curvy anyone would think some people are made from rectangles.
As far as clothes go and the 50s. I wear a lot of 50s style clothes and as _igeia said they wore things like girdles and corselletes. Its all knowing what to wear to create that look. 50s style is incredibly flattering.

It's all about bust/waist/hip ratio, I'm a large lady but I wouldn't call myself curvy, I'm large simple as that. Slim ladies also go in and out, that also makes them curvy and has nothin to do with dress size in my opinion  |

I'm def not athletic
I'm far from average
Curvy verses ample was one I had to think about..
I agree with the earlier poster, curvy reminds me of Kelly brook or Monroe so truthfully i can't sell myself as thst.
If a size 14 with softer curves and a wee bit of a belly makes me ample I'm content with that.
I don't think ample means fat it means a good handful

That whole post is entirely different to your saying being slim is unrealistic or a result of thousands on surgery, and that Nigella is more realistic despite her being on the larger side (but she's still not okay as she's had Botox).
I'm a size 6-8 so I'm similar to some celebrities in sizing, and I'm not unhealthy nor do I have an unrealistic body type nor do I spend all my time in the gym or thousands on surgery nor do I subscribe to fad diets. It just seems like an excuse people say to continue at a higher weight than accept it's possible to be similar in body size. |

If someone describes themselves as curvy, I imagine them to have curves, i.e. bust, waist and hips however small or big , short or tall they maybe. One curve,i.e. no waist isn't curvy. Just my opinion. |
