I hear what you're saying, but at the end of the day, to be honest I think it's just idiomatic, basically. |

Surely a danger that using it allows the other person to infer that the speaker might NOT be being honest?
Bit of an unfortunate linguistic quirk.
And if someone is doing it(consciously or otherwise)to make what they say be considered more agreeable, or sincere, or as a way of making the recipient alter their view to more mirror the speakers, then it's a bit dodge. Not to mention superfluous or even patronising: trust people to jusge your opinion based on the content of what you say, not how you say it!
It's one of a few persuasive techniques used by many though, including politicians. |
