Like using the word "basically" when explaining something, you literally can't avoid it, try it next time some one asks you to explain something

So? basically you are saying the word falls in without you meaning to actually put it in?

is that what you are basically saying?

Do you need explanations for all hackneyed phrases?

I hear what you're saying, but at the end of the day, to be honest I think it's just idiomatic, basically.

somewhere in the sticks

I read in a book explaining on non-verbal communication that saying this when exhibiting certain body language means the person is actually NOT being honest about what they're saying.

Why do people feel the need to write lol at the end of a sentence, to indicate what they've written is funny. I've always found that strange.

I use It to indicate what I have said is ironic in some way.

It's an odd one isn't it. I often see it on the end of a thread title "Please help my leg fell off. Lol"

Halifax

Surely a danger that using it allows the other person to infer that the speaker might NOT be being honest?

Bit of an unfortunate linguistic quirk.

And if someone is doing it(consciously or otherwise)to make what they say be considered more agreeable, or sincere, or as a way of making the recipient alter their view to more mirror the speakers, then it's a bit dodge. Not to mention superfluous or even patronising: trust people to jusge your opinion based on the content of what you say, not how you say it!

It's one of a few persuasive techniques used by many though, including politicians.
