Just got my first contactless payment card and I really like it.
However, having spent 15 years in IT Security, I know that it will only be a matter of time, if not already available, before you can get contactless readers off the likes of ebay.
Yes, I know the cards are encrypted, but there has always been brute force software that given sufficient time, can break any encryption.
So the worry is, that in crowded places, like the tube, sports events, gigs etc. you could have your card details harvested by someone brushing past you.
I've seen metal card holders for around £5, but they're bulky.
So, I've made 2 credit card sized blanks out of aluminium foil and inserted them in my card holder so they shield the cards.
Tried it out in the shop - works a treat, card reader wouldn't read it until I removed it from the card holder ![](/icons/s/biggrin.gif) |

Not a bad idea.
Some of them are a bit too sensitive.
I've heard of the person behind paying by accident or payment being taken from cards still in wallets and bags.
No sure his true sims are though.

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
"The sensitivity was was more of a problem when they first came out. Now they really need you to make contact. I call them Tap 'n' Go as they are not contactless.
"
Mine is definitely contactless. Don't need to do it very close to M&S or Boots readers, although I have to tap it for the Tube.
I'm so used to mine now I forget the max it can do is £30 . Tried to pay a £200 deposit with it today. ![](/icons/s/redface.gif) |

Yes, of course, that's the other worry, having a payment erroneously deducted |

"You can buy slim RFID wallets. "
Yes, but I like my credit card holder and would never put cards in my wallet.
I'm sure there will be shielded, slim card holders about, but a roll of foil costs around 50p from Tesco/ASDA/Sainsbury's |

I would prefer not to have a contactless card. My bank sent me one and apparently I am stuck with it. I won't use it as contactless. I'd change it for a regular chip and pin card if I could. |

"Last time there was a thread like this it got heated with "experts" claiming that cards could not be read"
Clearly they can be communicated with, else the technology would be pointless
I've been out of the industry for over 10 years, so not sure what the vulnerabilities are. One thing I did learn and I'm sure it's still true, nothing is ever 100% secure. |

If you don't like them, you can request a replacement which does not have it on. The first contactless card I received, i phoned to request a non contactless replacement and had one sent straight away. I tested it, to make sure and sure enough, it wasn't contactless.
I do embrace technology, but not this type. ![](/icons/s/surprised.gif) |

Sounds like a massive faff considering the slightest bit of dirt on my card stops it being recognised by the card reader, let alone anyone being able to 'swipe' it through a layer of jeans ![](/icons/s/confused.gif) |
