'My gift is my song, and this one's for you'

Ladies, which would you choose from your lover - a particularly costly gift (which we'll assume was purchased with expendable income), or a song written just for you, which would you value more?

surely anything personal is clearly more meaningful

"surely anything personal is clearly more meaningful "

For sentimental types, certainly.

A guy I dated wrote me a beautiful poem, which I still remember and treasure. I'd plump for the song.

The song - no contest ! Or something hand made if a gift from some one who is not musical.

I once went on a date & the person brought with him mixed seeds .Tied in a biodegradable tissue pouch to throw in an area that meant something to me ,instead of binging flowers -I absolutely preferred that & loved it ! x

My kids dad wrote me a song. In fact several. I'd have the song every time!

a song definitely, or a poem...either would be very much appreciated

The expensive present. The idea of some overly schmaltzy saccharine sweet song makes me want to vomit.

A more appropriate comparison for me would be expensive present vs spending time with him. In which case I'd value the time far more.

But a song, poem or similar bollocks - nope, not for me at all.

Some times expensive presents have their place for treats but anyone can spend money(if theyve got it) but not everyone has the imagination to make the simpliest things the most pleasurable

It's a difficult one for me....

I have received beautiful poems and notes (not a song) and I have received beautiful gifts and experiences...

I had a trip bought for me to Paris with a kiss under the Eiffel Tower

I have had emerald ring bought for me whilst sailing in the Caribbean

And I've had suicide notes written for me saying "I will always love you for you are true blue"

I think a genuine gesture that carries heartfelt thought is the most beautiful gift from a lover

Honestly, the present but it doesn't have to be expensive. If it's a thoughtful gift, or even as unique as the song would be, I'd be touched and humbled.

I'm sentimental with presents, I still have a pair of earrings my brother and sister gave me for my eighth birthday, the first cuddly toy my step dad bought for me when I was a child, the first picture my younger brothers drew for me ..... amongst many other things, and I love the memories attached to them.

I bet the sentimental song would be fucking cringey and forced. I'd rather the gift or nothing.

A cuppa and a cuddle do for me. I had a song written for me once and I found it a wee bit uncomfortable and icky.

It was ,I'm very much a lover of 'gorilla' gardening !

Rather unfortunate that it turned out that he was leading multiple lives but hey ho just think of all those meadows popping up all over the Country- it's got to be a winner for our bees at least lol ! ;p

I'd find it cringeworthy to have a song written for me.

I'm not romantic or sentimental in the slightest so would go for the gift, have my eyes on a rather lovely necklace by David Morris - realistically it's going to be a long wait.

When jay and i realised it was serious we realitically knew we probably wont have as much time together as others so we started making memories from the word go sometimes we can just be doing something and theres a moment i say close your eyes and we close our eyes and make the memory

Can only compare it to when I was a teenager & a boy from school wrote me a love poem, it was a bit cringe to be honest as it was pants.

So based on that experience I would rather the present if it meant he spent time choosing it specifically for me, knowing how much I would enjoy.

It's a funny thing, when creatively moved I have written half decent poems and songs for a few select people but I don't think any of them were particularly appreciated. However the songs were despised by others when I performed them, because they weren't written for them. Who'd be a poet or songwriter? I guess that's why I packed writing in.

My wife likes me to sing to her all the time, not compose a whole song, but spontaneously come up with something, half the time in Burmese! If she can't get to sleep she asks me to sing her a song.
