I had a chap round this morning to quote for maintenance of my double glazing/patio doors. Just aligning handles, level out dropped hinges, replacing the odd seal and clearing of debris from the drainage channels. He quoted almost 600 quid - labour only any extra bits and pieces he used would be additions.
I asked how long it would take and he said he could do it Wednesday morning. finishing by 1pm(ish).
I'm sorry but thats about £100 quid an hour. It's not anything I have had done before so don't have a yardstick to compare. I don't want to rob anyone of a living as I can't do the work myself so I need the help but I didn't realise I'd asked Robin Hood to quote.....
Is this a bit steep do you think? Or is it a reasonable going rate? |

I'd say thats outrageous , a decent joiner or glazier i'd think would charge £25 to £35 an hour + materials , thats what i charge for Electrical work , most trades are similar |

I think you will find that most garages charge 40.00 ph plus parts etc.
So i am sure you can work out if this guy is trying to rip you off.
Try a local tradesman rather than a large window company.
Good luck. |

In my opinion he's having you over.
sometimes when i'm asked to quote for jobs I can look at it in different ways.
If i'm quiet i'll try to price it as keen as i can without cutting my own throat and hope it's accepted.
sometimes i'm really busy and don't really have the time to do the work, other times i just don't like people who ask me to do work for them. on occasions I just tell them i'm too busy, other times i'll give them a price that is way over the top just to make sure it's not accepted. sometimes they are,so i do the job at an inflated rate. The extra allows for the fact i may have had to juggle my diary about or do work for someone i don't like. tra asks me how i sleep at night..its just business |

Ask him for an itemised quote.
Get three from others.
I'm pretty sure without looking that you could get the whole bloody thing replaced for not much more than that.
He has delusions of emergency plumbing ! |

Thank you all. Yep Ive been taken for a plum and suspected as much. I have another bloke coming tomorrow and I will tell him about the ridiculous first quote with more confidence to put him off doing the same thing. I have 4 sets of French windows and one sliding patio door so thought they might need
'specialist attention' but it seems its pretty bog standard work.
Very appreciative thank you

He rang me up just now and asked if he could pencil me in as he's doing his planning. I said I felt it was a little too expensive and he said the labour is in having to take out all the lower panels in each sealed unit (windows and conservatory) then clear debris as well as doing the doors. I told him no thanks. He dropped the price to £480!!!!! I still said no. He went a bit huffy. I can take that. |
